Don't quite know where to post this, but there is no DR Public Relations forum on which to address the country's image.

On last night's wildly popular Law and Order-SVU episode, the bad guy (a murderous pimp) simply told the good guys that he "was going to the Dominican" and "you can't touch me".

There were several references to "weak extradition laws" and the overall implication was that criminals' first thought in NY to escape justice is to "take a Dominican vacation."

Despite the fact that the good guys nabbed him before he got to fly to the DR, there was a very obvious image of his packed suitcases by the door when they finally got him. You have to wonder, to the highly suggestible American travelling public, what message re: the DR they took away from this episode.

Talk about bad product placement.

Its a friggen TV show - in reality if the US government wants a criminal in the DR for crimes committed in the US, he will end up back in the US via extradition or a variety of other means available.

I doubt anybody is losing sleep over this.

The reality is that the exrtradition of an individual is very difficult in the DR. Not impossible but very difficult and time consuming.

I also watched this show last night, and was appalled...not so much about the extradition, but about the use of the "Dominican"...when will they ever learn to name the country properly!!! Now, THAT really offended me!!! It sounds so demeaning... :(

PULEEZE!! "Victor" , the pimp was caught....

Look as the type of person that calls the DR "the Dominican" and you get an idea of what low life types are like....what is called in the country "mente de mosca"

Seems like that was a popular show!!

HB

Oh yeah. Ti Wah Chang has done several shows about Dominicans that flee to the DR after doing evil things inthe US. They are mostly back in US jails or awaiting trials. Fernandez, like the "good little boy he is" is making sure that all the protocols are being followed, but there are people extridited every week....This is not a safe haven.....

I don't think we need to worry much about what Americans think about the DR, most of them don't think about it at all.

I've been here nearly 8 years and friends and family still ask me, "so how are things down there in Costa Rica or wherever...."

Think about it?

You have to know about something before you can think about it.

EFoCB: You goin' to that place again?

CB: What place?

EFoCB: You know. THAT place. Down there.

CB: The Dominican Republic?

EFoCB: Is that it?

CB: Yeah.

EFoCB: Oh. I thought it was something else. Like El Dominico or something.

CB: Dominican Republic. Republica Dominicana. Dom Rep. Paradise.

EFoCB:That's it. Where is it again?

CB: The Eastern 2/3 of Hispanola.

EFoCB: Where's that? Near Nassau?

CB: Shares the island with Haiti.

EFoCB:  Haiti! THAT Haiti? The VooDoo Haiti? I heard about THAT! Does that stuff actually work?

CB: It must. I sacrificed a virgin chicken just to make you smarter...;)

FoCB: Really? :surprised :paranoid:

CB: Yep. And next trip I'm gonna do it again to make you good looking. :rambo:

Exactly!
That is what I thought when I heard them only use "Dominican" instead of the "Dominican Republic". Right away, I turned to my hubby and daughter and said "they don't even know the proper name of the country for goodness sake!"
I then actually chuckled and thought "oh, wouldn't a lot of DR1'rs be p***ed off right now" ! :cheeky:

Have you never heard of Bit Torrent? It's becoming the poor man's Tivo. I haven't missed a single episode of anything in 2 years, and I can go back and get entire seasons of shows that aired years ago in other countries.

You can also download any conceivable movie for free. If you want to see ?Departed? with Jack Nicholson, a top movie out now in the States you can get it. They had it the day after it opened. The quality was not bad either.

I hear a lot of Dominicans refering to their country as the "Dominican" or better yet "Santo Domingo", maybe they are using a short trendy version, like calling the USA, "America" or "The US". So don't get bent out of shape about it because Dominicans don't care so why should you.

From what I understand:
When the DEA, FBI etc etc, seek a criminal, UNLESS you have an escort around you around the clock & close by... When they really want you will scope your living place and when you least expect it brutalize you and bring you to justice by force.

In foreign countries they seek extradition and have a hard time doing so when the individual is marginallly wealthy, not so heard of by the public and properly laced with a mini-military.

Unfortunately in the Dominican Republic there are those that have been able to resist USA gov pressures for DR extradition, in a lengthy convincement to prosecute and punish inland... BE VERY SURE NO GOVERNMENT NOR CRIMINAL NOR ANY AMOUNT OF MONEY WOULD satisfy the desire of the US government to get whom they please. As for those stories of the ones that got away.. baloney ... consider those are just the elderly muggers that used a fork to get lunchmoney...

Point being go right and you will never go wrong.

Remember its the governments job for you to screw up and catch you, AND THEY WILL GET YOU!!!
