809 SCAM

I don?t know if this is a regional or nationwide problem, but thought you might want to know. Someone has set up a ?Scam? where they call your answering machine or pager and ask you to call an ?809? area code in the Dominican Republic. The number is set up like a ?900? number at twenty-five ($25.00) dollars per minute. The usual ploy is to say a friend or relative is ill or needs to reach you.

The local Phone Company nor US officials can not do anything as this originates outside the US

Have read about this a couple months ago. This is not just in the DR as the 809 area code services more then just the DR. But it has hit across the US from what I have heard

They specifically said the number is located in the DR, but could do nothing about it. The suggestion was that if you received one of these messages, call your Lond Distance operator and ask the rate for that call

THE LAST TIME THE SCAM FLOATED AROUND THE NUMBER WAS ANOTHER SMALLER ISLAND AND NOT THE DR. DON'T REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS THOUGH.
