Passort Issues...Please Help!

I am planning my first trip to the DR maybe this summer from the US, I have a open travel time.

The US does not issue passports to those owing $xxx in child support, unfortunately I fall into that catagorey.

Last year, my employment fell off and I got behind; though I am making payments and getting caught up, they still won't issue.

I understand that I can enter the DR without a passport(with approved documents that I do have), however the challenge would be getting back in.

I thought I saw a post here that one could get a passport in the DR and travel back to the US? is that true? what documents should I bring to the DR to prepare for such? Any idea on the cost?

Finally, if there any suggestions on when and where I should visit on my first trip I'd appreciate the help...oh! I don't speak spanish yet.

Since when does the US not issue passports to anyone that applies?? Have you applied for one?

You won't be permitted to fly out of the US by the airline unless you can prove you can return. They won't care if you can enter the DR without a passport.

If in fact you do get to the DR and then apply for a passport, it will still have the same red flag raised as if you applied for it in the US. I don't know what the outcome is at that point, i.e., your right to return to the US vs. the right to deny you a passport. I have said before there may be a constitutional issue here, but you may have to make the DR your new home until it is resolved.

Maybe, instead of taking a vacation, you should provide your kids with the support they deserve. You making time payments now didn't house, feed and clothe them when you weren't paying.

The US will not issue a passport to anybody who is arrears in child support over a certain amount, I believe it is $10,000.

scovens, why don't you do the right thing, and pay off your child support debt first, before thinking about taking a vacation to get away from your stressful life? The DR is already full of deadbeat dads. Do the right thing, and help YOUR KIDS first, by paying their mother what you legally owe. Then get your passport with no hassles....in the meantime, you can learn some spanish before coming here, and not having to worry about how to get back home.

I don't think you will get any help here when you are deliquent in your child support payments. Yes, losing a job is a bummer, but you still have the responsibility to make your child support payments. If you are deliquent because you and your ex get into a peeing contest all the time, you need to remember that your marital issues DO NOT factor into your support issues. So do as has already been suggested, get a job, support YOUR children, get caught up with your payments, and then think about traveling to the DR. It IS a beautiful country, with beautiful people.

Remember... any guy can be a FATHER, it takes a real man to be a DAD!

It depends on the state you are a resident for the amount. Some states if you owe under $5,000 then you can get one. Other states it is a zero tolerance policy (like illinois) if you owe anything you will not get a passport until it is paid off.
Even if you have a letter from your baby mama - if the state says you owe - then you owe and there is a hold on you.

I appreciate all the concern for my children. As I stated, I am paying the support. Did I mention those 2 children now live with me, but this states doesn't care. For all of those that cheerlead so hard did you hear, I lost my job, they folded. Everyone is so quick to jump on someone who is striving to do the "right thing" rather acknowledge the efforts of those who are. For HOWMAR it's $2,000.00, but thanks. I have not and would never be a dead beat Dad, though I could not pay the court ordered support, I was still at their school, helping with homework...ect. I am a FATHER and DAD.
Now, why don't I just pay it off, try knowing the circumstances BEFORE you make assertians, I have often found people take a different posture when they seem to be accused of doing wrong, expecially of those that may live in glass houses.
Well, Thanks for the help, however since I wasn't able to get anything truly constructive (but highly critical), I shall take my trip, inspite of the harsh onesided tones...well those except A.J. Thank you!

One last thing - which you may be able to do. Many states will take credit cards for the payment of back child support (i know crazy but they will do it)
If you or someone who trusts you may be able to do is put it on a credit card and once the money clears you can get a passport.

off topic...I never understood the notion that the father pays the most child support because he was the bread winner...but when he isnt the bread winner any more and the mother makes all the money....they dont shift any bruden at all......still on the guy that pees standing up........they keep trying to squeeze that rock.....

good luck on the passport....with the new rules..its a passport or two other official travel documents....dont remember exactly what they are now.....they are goverment issued to certain individuals....

Thanks for that understanding. The other goofy side to that is this state does not care that you are an active parent, just pay. Here is sheer craziness...my daughter wanted a laptop (to replace the desktop I build for her, simple enough). Well, I asked the Judge can I not pay the $xxx in support payment so I can use that money towards the laptop, I will submit the receipt; his response, "you are accountable for the payments, they should be made directly through the support office if you want to get credit and not be held in contempt, if the mother chooses to use the money for that purpose that's her choice." Unfortunately, the child support is widely used as a weapon against others in anger. I have never not been there for my children (now teens), when I decided to re-marry 5 years ago, here we go to child support.

And while you want to divert the child support for a computer that your daughter doesn't need, who pays for her food, clothing, shelter, etc? You just don't get it.

didnt he?....he did at one point mention they kids were living with him, but he still paid child support to the spouse!!

I had to do the same thing for a while...it is just like a dominican thing...it doesnt make sense...BUT thats the preceedure!!!!! we CANY change teh proceedure!!!!......the judge just says..."IT SAYS HERE THAT HE PAYS>>>SO JUST PAY

He said living with him "now". By that, I would infer they didn't always. If he in fact had full custody, he simply should have petitioned to have his spouse pay child support to him.

Really not an answer to his question. We all know that the US is going to require Americans to have a valid passport to return to the US. We also know that the DR has not changed it's requirement of only a birth certificate and photo ID to enter the DR. His qustion is still unanswered... if he were to make it to the DR, would he in effect become a man without a country as he can't obtain a passport to return to the US?

BTW, there are plenty of you tourists trying to play poker to go around for all the casinos. Too bad there are only 7 nights in a week to play.

Actually, to answer his question, he can reenteer the US without a passport if he were to take the ferry from SD to Puerto Rico as land and sea ports of entry won't require a passport for at least another year.
