Howdy all!

A bunch of friends and I will be going down to the Dominican Feb. 18th for 1 week. We have 16 signed up but I have yet to do so because I have read a few problems about the Hotel they're staying at, The Allegro Playa Dorada.

Is it really as bad as they say?

Also, my friends and I would like to do some Deep Sea fishing. I've heard mixed reviews about fishing off the North Coast and were wondering perhaps if it would be possible if there are any packages that would get us transportation to better fishing grounds (ie. Punta Cana) as well as the fishing charter and transportation back to our hotel?

My girlfriend and I would also like to try snorkelling/diving.

I'm really confused because as soon as I read something great about the hotel, I read something bad. So can a few of you people who have obviously taken the time to read this enlighten me? :squareeye

P.S. Is their casino really closed?

Stayed there 2 yrs ago. Will be there again in Jan. If their casino is closed you can walk to Jack Tar in about 5 min. Don't take all reviews as gospel as a lot of them are from people who expect 5 star accomodations while paying $700 bucks with airfare.
Fishing- don't bother unless you want to go on a 5hr boat ride. Any local (other than the tour operator) will tell you Feb is not a good month for it. My brother took a boat last year anyway- SKUNKED....

Allegro

Not a bad resort, as said in previous post many people expect 5 star accomodations for next to nothing.
As for the casino, you will not be walking to Jack Tar as it is now Holiday Golden Beach, but there is a bus that can take you to the new Ocean World casino, check in the lobby for pickup times.

Alrighty well I just found out that the hotel now has a shuttle going to and from Jack Tar/Holiday Golden for free for the duration of those renovations.

I also couldn't find any information on the website regarding a room upgrade. Do they only have 1 class of room available or could I upgrade to a suite/better room?

Allegro Playa Dorado's Casino is reopening under new management on January 2. It has been taken over by the management company that runs the American Casino at the Holiday Golden Beach (former Jack Tar Hotel). They have been training the staff at the American Casino and will split the experienced staff between the two casinos.

Thanks for the extremely quick reply, sounds like you know your stuff.

Any tips on what to do/not to do while I'm there? How far our are the reefs from the beach if I wanted to do some snorkeling?

First off: Happy New Year! (Buenos Annos Neuvos (I'm trying to work on my spanish)

Do we have access to the whole beach or simply the area in front of the hotel?
