I'm looking at a trip to Cabarete in March but the nearest airport is in Puerto Plata, which flights are expensive to. On the other hand, JetBlue flies to Santiago for much cheaper...is it far from Santiago to Cabarete and how would I get there?

If it is too far, is there somewhere near Santiago where there are small waves for surfing as well as other activities - rafting, hiking, canyoning, etc.?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Santiago airport to Cabarete is about 1 1/2 hours by taxi. A nice sightseeing ride through the mountains, probably US$60-$70 each way. Others can give you names of reliable drivers you can pre-arrange to meet you at the airport. Cost of taxi may not offset flight savings unless there are several of you coming.
For comparison, Pto Plata airport is about a 20 minute ride & taxi will cost about $30 each way in total.

Small waves near Santiago for surfing? That would be Cabarete :cheeky:

Rafting, hiking, canyoning... google Jarabacoa. It's a small town about a 30 minute ride from Santiago in the mountains more or less the opposite direction from Cabarete. Several waterfalls and opportunities to hike & do some canyoning. You can also check Iguana Mama - Mountain Biking, Hiking & Ecological Adventures, a tour company in Cabarete with a good reputation, that can take you there on a day trip.

Thank you so much for the quick response!!!

So are the waves ok for surfing (wave surfing as opposed to kitesurfing) in Cabarete? Also thanks for the great link to Iguana Mama, their tours look awesome

Kites & windsurfing are the biggest draws in Cabarete, but for surfing Playa Encuentro which is just a few minutes from town is where people head to surf. Off The Radar - SURF Magazine
Again, you can google 'playa encuentro' for more info.

I haven't been out there myself, but it's not unusual to see trucks with surfers in back heading out in the mornings.

Some of the water sport oriented hotels, like Extreme Cabarete for example can probably give you the whole package including transport. Regardless of your hotel choice, you can still get equipment rentals, lessons, transport, etc without any problems at multiple places in town.

Good source for Cabarete specific info Welcome to Cabarete Kiteboarding / Kitesurfing

Santiago to Sosua on the Cariba (sp?) Tours coach is RD$100 (approx US$3) Then a cab from Sosua to Cabarete won't be much. Comfortable, air-conditioned, couple of hours ride.

It was reasonably straight forward even for a non-Spanish speaker like wot I is.

You didn't include getting him from the airport to the bus terminal in Santiago. Wouldn't he be surprised if he got off the plane looking for the bus.:glasses:
By the time you take a taxi from the airport to the Santiago bus terminal, and a taxi from Sosua bus terminal to Cabarete, you probably are better off taking a taxi the entire trip.

A friend got a quote for 450 pesos (US$15) taxi Cabarete-Sosua the other day (cheaper than I would've thought). Cabarete to POP airport's about $30, so I guess it makes sense.

So... taxi-bus-taxi Santiago to Cabarete at least 3 hours and US$35.
Taxi direct Santiago to Cabarete about 1 1/2 hrs and $US70+/-.

what is the different air fares??? from where you are to POP and the same to STI

how much are you saving by flying into STI

remember each step pf the trip that is extra from STI to where you want to go...has the potential to cause a problem...you can get ripped off, a flat in the cab, a missed buss..a bus accident..a cab accident...a washed out mountain road...local discord on the way against the goverment....BOTH WAYS

I dont know where you are coming from...but JFK to STI via jetblue and their rediculous hours..is the SAME FREAKING price as AA with normal hours!!

where is jetblues discount?

many times if you book the hotel-resort with an airfare...you get a big discount... and if you do that to that area...you will probably get POP airport

besides...i seriously doubt a BUS would make that trip in 1.5 hours
I have driven it more than a dozen times and I think the best I made to cabarette was 1-1/4 hours...and i pass everyone in front of me..and can be reguarded as out of my mind...

I can understand if the days are not avaiable for a certain airport....but all that to save $100 even...no way in my mind

good luck

I found some jetblue flights (from BOS and thru JFK) for $104 each way...cheapest I've seen on other airlines to POP is $493 for one stop
I'm also a huge fan of jetblue

glad to hear a good review of Paradise Transportation

BIGBIRD: No, it is the smaller of the two stations, the first one you reach coming from Santo Domingo or the airport. (That's why iI puT "Los Jardines" in the note..)

City of Champions: paradise trans is top of the line and they provide extremely outstanding service. I am not sure we have ever, ever, seen a complaint about them in several years that we have been recommending them.

Certainly if you have a group of two, three or four, you just cannot beat that price to Cabarete. Even for one person, the comfort and safety is so reassuring that the whole trip is more enjoyable.

Just make sure that you book your return trip to the airport with them, since you have to be at STI at least 2 hours ahead of time....

=Have a wonderful trip!

oops! I meant to write that I had no idea how far the airport was to the bus stations!

It was RD$100 in November and took about two hours from when we left Santiago, although from the first coach station, we went to the second and then sat there for about half an hour! All told, the trip took me about three hours. I then got a cab from Sosua to Cabarete for US$20.

So it will cost about US$30 from Santiago or US$30 from Puerto Plata. But one trip is thirty minutes and one is cracking up towards four or five hours (when you add in waiting for the coach to arrive).

wow what a task..lots of questions

great city
I think with out a guide as to your intrests...it is tough to list all the things to do..there are a lot

Centro Leon Jimenes...is like a cultural center...has a museum or two and other things to see. at 146 ave 27 de feberero

you have the tobacco museum on ave de Agosto ..dont know the number

you have the monument a los heroes de la restauracion...called "The Monument" for short..It is ona bunch of streets but calle de sol is one big street it is on

there is also a folk lore museum...a few blocks away from the tobacco museum

near the monument is the national theater..I know events happen there once in a while..I have always had a hard time trying to find any schedules

there are tons of bars and nightspots...

on the west side of town is like a farmers market-fleamarket style area..that encompasses a bunch of streets, and its neat to walk around there and see everything being sold out in the open...

for places to dine...you have tough choices....sooo many.....close to the monument are a few larger ones, Camp David on the outside of town...

then lots of little special ones that are great, but youd never know by driving by....need a tip for those places

they have about 3 casinos in town....and at least 2 movie theaters I think

plus a baseball stadium where one of the domincan professional teams calls home

good luck
