Any suggestions on seeking out positions at international NGOs with programs in DR? I am currently living in New York City but would like to relocate. I have a dual Masters degree in International Affairs and Public Health and 10 years of varied experience in the field of public health, mainly in the US but a little in West Africa. Fluent in Spanish and proficient in French. It is often hard to find out about open positions that don't make it to the organization's website. Thanks, Gina

You could try contacting organisations like Profamilia, UNICEF, Catholic Relief Services, Intermon-Oxfam, Helvetas, Save the Children, Plan, Aide en Action, World Vision, PAHO, PADF, Progressio (CIIR-ICD) all of which have programmes in the DR, and may be working in the health sector. You can find their websites via Google.

There is far more scope in Haiti, or at least in the DR-Haiti border region.

Other possibilities could include the US Peace Corps.

Here is a directory of DR organisations, but it's far from complete:

Not-for-Profit Help :: Dominican Republic Directory - Directorio y Buscador Dominicano

If you're not here, the only thing you can do is make contact via the website, even if they don't have vacancies posted. Sending a CV by e-mail is not always that fruitful, so the best thing would be to come over on a visit and try and set up meetings with their HR officers, or the relevant staff member. If you have any personal contacts, all the better.
