The time is slowly approaching for me to get my passport renewed and I was wondering if any of the frequent Canadian travellers have had any issues when they renewed their passports ...

Reason for the question is that more and more customs is on my ass everytime I come back... for instance ... this past Saturday... they made go to a customs agents before exiting into the airport and they scanned my luggage about 10 times back and forth and opened it and pretty much dumped everything out on the table, than told me to repack it, and I told them you dumped it you pack it !!! Not to mention the billions of questions they f'ing ask like always... where do you work, how much u make, how do you get the time off, did you pay for your own ticket, how do you know people there, and my most recent favourite one ... how much money do you have in your bank account right now... for f$%K sakes I wasen't aware I had to carry my damn bank card and statements with me now...

So really my question is ... am I gonna have this drama when I go get my passport renewed, cause if so I will just travel on my Polish passport till that baby expires...

P.S - I'm sure my lovely attitude never helps at the airport .... stupid questions get stupid answers !

Barbie fill your passport application on line and you will breeze right through the lines in Kitchener. I helped my sister with it last summer and this past Friday my daughter said, thanks for telling me about the online application. When she got to Kitchener the room was filled so she asked one of the security people about hers being filled online and he escorted her right up to the right window, ;)

She said she felt guilty but not for long ;)

Here's the link, fill it out and then print it Passport Canada: Applying for a passport - Passport on-line

Now don't give me attitude just do what I say!

A smile goes a long way ;)

AnnaC,

thanks for the link, my son's passport expired and he's dragging his feet going to get it renewed, but since he can renew on line I 'm pretty sure this will "work for him" since he's always on line

Names have to match ID

The time is slowly approaching for me to get my passport renewed and I was wondering if any of the frequent Canadian travellers have had any issues when they renewed their passports ...
Yes online is the way to go. The only issue I had was the fact that I was trying to revert back to my maiden name on my passport and my supporting documents didn't match up. (Stupid blonde) I had to alter the application when I presented the ID and then they pointed out that if I would have shown up at the airport with airline tickets in another name that didn't match the passport I'd be up the creek without a paddle.

Also you pay more for express service, so don't leave it too late. :)

la barbie the reason they are hassling you is because you travel too often to the same place therefore you are singled out as potenially being a "mule"also because you are a female. And what I mean by that is DR is known as having drug traffiking and you could be carrying the drugs back to Canada cuz of you're numerous trips you make each year. You are very lucky they didn't do a body/cavity search.Better to not let your mouth get in the way as they can make your life miserable everytime you return to Canada.

I had the same experience as you - although mine was with US customs...EVEN though I was only transiting through the US and had my ticket through to Mtl....

Funny enough though - when I got to the place where they go through your bags...The inspector guy saw all my race gear and my ticket to Montreal and said "why would they send you back here" (and then mumbled idiots) looked in my helmet bag and said "Im satisfied - have a good flight"

BUT the women at the customs wicked was BRUTAL!!!! Asking all the same questions you got asked.

In terms of renewing your passport - I heard on the radio this morning that the line ups are 3+ hours long right now (in montreal) because of the new passport requirements. Crazynessss!

My girlfriend and family are travelling to Hawaii in February, they applied for their passports in mid-November, her 14 year old daughters application was sent back because the picture was the wrong size and her 11 year old sons was also denied because his hair looked too shiny in the picture!!!!!!!
They were told to re-apply with new pictures and still to this day, have not received their passports. We are not in Southern Ontario and so now they are going to try to go to Winnipeg (3 1/2 hours away) and see if they can just sit and wait in the passport office to get some answers.
They are totally frustrated, it seems that they forgot all about the people in Northern Ontario that just cannot drive to a passport office and that actually have to apply online or through the mail.

la barbie, just travel here on your polish passport and back on your canadian (after you renew it, i mean). as a pole you'd be presumed to be poor and therefore never asked a word.
i have never had my luggage checked, no questions asked either.
it helps if you look like a piece of rubbish, which i always do when i fly on the account of motion sickness and/or motion sickness medicine.
also - smile! i know you can... LOL

ps i just realized, you can travel on your polish passport only plus your birth certificate (so they let you back INTO canada...)

Save the attitude for McDonald's counter staff ... any attitude with customs is a bad thing especially US Border and Security. They are the most despicable people on this planet. I was detained in Puerto Rico for 2 hours while being interrogated on just about my entire life. :(

reminds me about renewal of my polish passport - reference for you, la barbie. you don't have to wait long if you are ready to pay extra.
anyway, when you go to pick up new passport you have to bring the old one, and this woman, walkiria, giant mutant takes the old passport, puts it on the floor in the hole puncher and BANG! steps on it with a stone crushing force. you end up with all 32 pages punched!
quite a show, it is...

Same for Canada. We call it a renewal but it really isn't, you get a brand new one with clean pages so they have no idea where you've been the first time you use it.
Hear that Barbie? New pages, be nice and they won't flag you ;)

I get this all the time! I always travel alone to go see my husband and customs always question me in the airport when I get back to Toronto. They take me into that room, check my luggage inside out, ask me a bunch of questions "why do you travel as often to the DR?"..."where do you work?"..."what type of work is that?"..."do you own or plan to buy real estate in the DR?"...and so on. It's such a hassle especially when you feel like crap and you've just been crying all the way home 'cause you just had to leave your husband! I even try to go in the line where I think the person will be nice but I always get the a**hole who interrogates me and sends me to that freakin' room to get my luggages checked! Urrgghhhh! But true enough, best not to give attitude and just smile right through it!

New pages are grand and all - but unfortunatly it still has that little bar code thingy - that they scan in their little computer...and voila, they know all about your travels from the last god knows how many years.

Possible to get Canadian Passport in the DR

Gary,

Yes, you can obtain a Canadian Passport in the DR.

Check out this link: Passport Canada: Applying for a passport

You can go to one of the Canadian Embassy Offices to submit and process your passport application, there's one in Santo Domingo and the other in Puerto Plata - addresses and further info are on the website.

Wendy A. Thanks a million.

No problema Gary!

Looks like wait time for processing is longer than normal but not sure if this also applies to applications submitted from overseas...heck, might even be longer! I guess you better submit your application sooner rather than later!
