DAJABON, Dominican Republic. - A Dominican court today sentenced 4 citizens from this nation to 10 and 20 years in prison for the death of 25 Haitians who died asphyxiated in a truck in the country?s northwest in 2006.

It is good to see some justice. I am sure that they are just a handful of those that continue the practice.

I remember reading about that and talking to some people there when it happened. It was shocking but unfortunately not a huge surprise.

I was told by someone that in the DR a 20 year sentence is in actuality
a 10 year sentence because a day and a night is considered as one day.
Does anyone have any knowledge about this?

I believe DR courts can't administer neither life nor death sentences. ..and so I would like to know what is the highest prison sentence a Dominican court can dole out?
