Three US citizens have been arrested for sexual abuse of minors in this country in less than three months.

P.S.:
As the latest arrest was in Arroyo Fr?o I hope it does not have anything to do with Dr. Goldberg's activities there in the 1930's.... ;)

I does not happen everywhere... I've noticed that there's a disproportionate amount of sex offenders in developed nations vis-a-vis underdeveloped ones. I did a little research, and the cause seems to be that underdeveloped nations do not categorize crimes the same way developed nations, particularly sex crimes. There's also underreporting. A few months ago, a US sex offender died in DR police custody. I looked him up, and it turned out that he was a practicing shrink in Salt Lake City, and sexually explicit pictures of minors were found in his hard disk, by a computer repair technician. He jumped bail and missed his sentencing date, running to the DR. I looked up one of the guys recently caught in Arroyo Fr?o, Constanza (not Arroyo Fr?o, Moca). It turns out he was a Sargeant Major stationed in a US Air Base in Germany, where his superiors found kiddy porn in his hard disk. He was discharged by the Army, and later proceded to challenged his conviction in court. He lost, and didn't show up for sentencing, running to the DR. Why do these guys keep running to the DR? They're sitting ducks here!

So how do they treat those with criminal records? It seems that being 3rd world is it at times quite lax.
However, I wouldn't want to be caught there doing anything even remotley illegal.

remember reading in one of the local rags last week about a french person arrested in juan dolio when he was caught trying to rape an 11 year old boy (the boy screamed, attracting attention).
the local police said it was not the first time he (the frenchie) had been brought to the attention of the police.

after getting over the initial horror of what i was reading, i realised that he was probably hiding from authorities here......

providing the information is true (which it may not be), three points i have to make;
1). why the flying feck didn't the police squeeze his nuts off the first time.
2). i hope he rots in a real dominican prison (not a softy one for extranjeros).
3). i hope the frenchies and other europeans forget about him.

i have heard that lots of people that made monies illegally in their home countries move here to live their life in peace. that seems to extend to those who got into into trouble with law, DR is a paradise for many....

to be fair i still remember the story about british ex pop star, what was his name? glitter, i think, arrested and convicted in thailand for sexually molesting children. so it does happen elsewhere as well.....

Many foreigners runnning from the law in their home countries flock to the DR because of these reasons:

1) easy immigration and ability to work here (and get residency) after arriving on tourist visa. Most other countries in the Caribbean this is next to impossible as they protect local jobs more, e.g. Bahamas

2) lots of other foreigners here already to provide help e.g. logistical/informational support.

3) corrupted government insitutions

my abogado told me there are many foreigners who benefit from clean passports after they get dominican citizenship, which seems to be a thing achieved with little effort. presumably dominican government does not check papers that come with an application against original papers in the home county of the applicant.

i don't know if it is still true, but germans were able to collect the dole (unemployment benefit) without actually living in germany. i'm not sure if it was strictly legal, but it was very possible.

also many germans (still?) try to escape military service

a lot of germans from both groups end up in the dom rep.

of course, ......there are some good ones as well.

There are tons of NON germans that are escaping from whatever it might be in this country. You should try to keep your own house clean before looking to the others.

This is true. There are dodgy Americans, Canadians, Brits, Italians, French, Russians and others in addition to Germans in the DR.

Interpol has repatriated a fair number over the years.

Rocky tells a funny story of a disco in Sosua a few years ago. The national police blocked the exits, shut off the music and made everybody leave the place single file. They checked ID's of foreigners. There were several Interpol agents in civilian clothes checking the ID's and they wound up handcuffing half a dozen or so to be hauled off by the police.

They were probably offered free rides home for joyful reunions with their families and prosecutors.

i was responding to helpmann's post that was specifically asking about germans, but, if in fact it was necessary, forgot to quote.

why should i keep my own house clean before looking to others? that doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

Just Curious...

It's a country full of Ex-pats from Germany and Italy. I was just curious to know at what period in time Germans and Italians began flocking to the DR.

First it was 'uoi', then came the 's?', followed by the 'yah', and last but not least the 'yeah', like 'Yeah, baby!!'

my fault, you are right, it was vietnam, not thailand.

Actually he committed offences in both countries.

Here in the DR there are many sex offenders - especially peodophiles. Im sorry to say that the majority are Germans. However the German authorities are working on extracting some of these filthy scum.

There are actually small areas that have been sectionned off by these people
especially to use and film children for sexual purposes. They then sell this
over the internet to other scum.

I hope DR1ers keep their eyes open we all need to help these children.
If every good man etc...
Interpol is already here.
