I'll be staying at Sun Village with my 4 girlfriends in early March 07.... all 5 of us are single twentysomethings from NYC who like to indulge in drinking & dancing while vacationing. We're hoping to do the usual girly spa stuff at Sun Village, and relax by the pool most of the days, but otherwise, we're wondering what there is to do "off resort". What exactly is Confresi? A town or a beach? I've read that Sosua is closeby and it's a good DR experience with a nicer beach... any tips? Also, anyone know anything about the "pub crawl" in Puerta Plata? I've also heard about the "Rum Runners" tour...? We're flying into Santiago on a Tuesday afternoon, what should we expect to pay for a driver to Confresi? Any advice about the local nightlife would be great. Thanks again!

There's no real nightlife in Cofresi... lots of bars in Sosua and a really nice beach, but you'll probably enjoy yourself more (based on your group) in Cabarete, the next town past Sosua. The nightlife is geared towards 20-somethings, mostly Europeans, Canadians, and Americans. Cabarete also has a really nice beach, overall, a little more "upscale" than Sosua. You can also try the Mangu disco in Playa Dorada, not far from Cofresi. There are many clubs and bars in Puerto Plata, but they are mostly geared towards locals.

The pubcrawl from Cafe Cito sounds ok, but you could rent a cab between the five of you and do the same thing for less money...in Sosua and Cabarete, all the bars and clubs are walking distance from each other.

THere are several tour companies that offer booze cruise type excursions and Jungle Tours with drinks and food included. Do a little searching here and you'll get a list with contact info.

Can't help you with the cab from Santiago, but I'd guess it would be around $60 US.

It's NOT Confresi, it's Cofresi!!! I know it's hard, but do try!

The casino at Ocean World is worth a look over as well as the lounge one floor up.

For night life in Puerto Plata area - quite frankly Sosua and Cabarete are too far away on dangerous roads at night - there is quite a lot of choice in Puerto Plata area.

First what kind of night life are you looking for? Tourist clubs? Local clubs?

Are you looking for restaurants as well?

I would not suggest the pub crawl. For that amount of money you can have a lot more fun yourselves and on your schedule! I will be happy to give you ideas on where to go once I have a bit more info.

The other tours are daytime tours that almost all include alcohol, but not sure that is what you are looking for.

For your transfer from Santiago - did you get a price from Sun Village? They can arrange your transfer for you. A taxi can be arranged in advance as well.

My first thoughts when I read this (besides correcting her -Cofresi not Confresi) was that these girls are going to be headed for trouble!

I agree with Planner that the CafeCito pub crawl is expensive - BUT - these girls plan on "indulging in drinking" which is a very big concern. I think it might be better for them to be on a somewhat supervised tour and not on their own if they are planning on being drunk. This could lead them into some real bad situations, if they are roaming around in a taxi, loaded, and not actually in control of their situation.

I totally disagree that they should travel to Sosua and Cabarete, especially at night, again just asking for trouble. Day trips would be fine, as long as they didn't end up "indulging in drinking" and relying on total strangers to take them all the way back to Cofresi in the dead of night.

To the OP, please be careful out there, drink moderately and use your heads. You will enjoy your vacation so much more!

Marlie, Thanks for your advice and concern, it's much appreciated. I should have clarified that we're not messy, sloppy drunks or anything.... two in the group are late twenties/early thirties, so we're not the stereotypical spring breakers that are gonna get hammered every night. What I meant was, we're more about relaxing and having fun.... we're not the "tourist guide book / fanny pack" type of crew, ya know? I would agree though, that I'd rather pay more for an "supervised" group tours than have to figure out my own transportation to save a few bucks.... it's vacation, I sorta expect to splurge and be overcharged for things.

In response to the other poster.. so Cabarete is how far away from Cofresi (I realized the typo the second I hit 'post').... in minutes? and how much $$$ for a cab? I think we'll probably hang out at the resort the first few nights, but I've heard that the resort bars are kinda lame... what is the "curfew" that has been mentioned? What time do the bars usually start to get crowded? (P.S. we're probably looking for more tourist bars.... or maybe a good authentic DR disco with dancing?)

Cabarete is a good 45 to 55 minutes from where you are depending on traffic. Cab fare - I am not sure and it is tougher to get a taxi late at night.

Curfew - Sunday to Thursday the bars close at midnight except in the tourist designated areas. Playa Dorada bars stay open very late.

Tourist bars - go to Mangu, Roadway or Hemingways at Playa Dorada. They don't really get started till after 11pm

Local bars - many to choose from for good local music and dancing. Almost no music outside of Merengue, bachatta and salsa with a couple of reggaetons thrown in. They get started normally by about 9.

Let me know if you want more specifics.

Cofresi ideas

I have now been back from Cofresi for two weeks. The spa at Sun Village is heavenly. It is a lovely facility and the hot rock massage was wonderful along with the steam, mineral bath and pool.

I have been going to Cofresi since long before Ocean World and Sun Village were there. It is still not a haven for great night life. Ocean World is a must. The night show is very entertaining and the food great. The show runs Wednesday through Sunday. The Casino is smallish but makes for a good evening of entertainment. During the day is this the sea creature shows swims etc.

Other spots in the area include Teddy Island BBcue. !00 peso for a warm beer was a bit much.......when I said I wanted a muy frio they found me a cold one. Chris and Mady's has great seafood and there are ususally some interesting people hanging out there. Plaza Taina just had the opening of there resturant....and the internet is cheap there. And the mosquitoe spray isn't outrageous in price. The mosquitoes and sand fleas can be bad.

Cabarette and Sosua make for a great day trip and I would agree that travel at night to and from there is not something I would do.

If you have any specific questions feel free to P.M. me Have a nice trip.

I'd be inclined to suggest you have one night booked into a hotel in Cabarete to avoid travelling at night. You could get an apartment/two bedroom for about $50 between you. The standard of driving is bad enough in the day, at night it is really scary and to be avoided if you can! If you only pack beach stuff & a night out stuff, you could get the gua-gua for about forty pesos from Puerto Plata each way, so what you save on a taxi covers the hotel room! That way you have a day on the beach and a night on the drink in relative safety... If the hangover isn't too bad, you might even manage a second day on the beach...

Chris and Maddy's rocks .... but you have to be your own entertainment. This is easy for me hehehe, but either way - C&M is a great spot to meet locals.

Stay well,
Amy
