I know this is a sad title to my thread but my good friend is now almost 400lbs and has sleep apnea. He is only 35 years old and in addition he has asthma. He has gained almost 100lbs in the last year and has difficult breathing and snores worse than anybody i have ever seen in my life.

His mom already lost 2 of his brothers due to MEDICAL problems in the last 10 years and I do not want to see her lose a 3rd.

Are there any clinics or MD's that offer help for sleep apnea.

Are there any clinics or any MD's that offer the new "band surgery" for obese individuals in Santo Domingo or Santiago?

I am currentkly in the U.S. & will be back next week, I would like to help him.
Any help would be greatly apprecialted.

I'm not sure of any clinics in the DR, but worse comes to worse, you can buy a CPAP machine online.

Dear Incredible, sorry about your friend. It is my opinion that the biggest, best equipped hospital in Santo Domingo is "Hospiten". Located at Almer Mater, Esq. Bolivar. I just spent 3 weeks there, mostly in intensive care when my kidneys failed. The Drs are beyond excellent, so are all the trained nurses and they have all the most modern equipment. The Gastroentologic Dra is Rosa Maria Abraham Tel. 809-541-3000. Cel. 809-884-8290. EM is Hospiten ;The Medical director is Dr. Carlos Amoros Baez, same phone# ; Cel. 809-754-8687. If they can't help him, I believe they will give excellent advice. Best of luck! Canadian Bob.

Incredible,
I had a family member with the same problem. As he fell deeper in his sleep, he would stop breathing losing oxygen until his body notices and he wakes up. He used to do it throughout the night, heavy snoring too and always tired (as you would imagine, constantly waking up). We thought he was going to die, but the problem was fixed quite easily with this machine which pumps oxygen into his nose throughout the night. That was the first time he had slept throughout the night in over a decade. I suggest that if you want to keep your friend alive, you should buy one in the US and ship it to the DR. The weight problem can wait.

Sleep Apnea is the symptom. He may need bariatric surgery. In a former life, my company had a division that worked with bariatric surgery patients post-op at home. I've literally seen miracles worked with it.

Here is a link to The American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS), the largest society for this specialty in the world.

I have heard of a guiy in SDQ who performs the surgery, Dr. Abel Gonzalez. His website is: Cirug?a Bari?trica Dr. Abel Gonzazlez

I wish your friend well. He will die if he doesn't get help.

Best Wishes.

There is a sleep specialist who operates a sleep clinic at, or next to, the clinica Corazones Unidos in Santo Domingo. It isn`t cheap, at about RD$25,000 or RD$30,000 for the night`s evaluation, but it sure beats the alternative.

If the Dr diagnoses sleep apnea, he will also prescribe the type of machine (there are types other than just CPAP), as well as the pressure setting needed for that partricular patient. Any internet seller of these machines will also require the prescription and the appropriate setting for that machine.
I would recommend googling "CPAP man" - they give great service.

Is there anyway you can get me the name or phone number of the clinic?
Thanks in advance!
