How far is Macao from Playa Bavaro?

Definitely too far to walk.....a taxi will get you there.
Can't say about the surfing....last time I was at Macao it was before they started building an exclusive resort. Don't know if you can still access the beach (it's a planned gated community with limited access) but hopefully someone with current info can let you know.
Great surf when we were there. Close by is Playa del muerte which had even better surf but a dangerous undertow!!

Macao Beach is open to public access.

If you are taking you family, take a taxi. Bring "soft racks" to carry your
board. Under NO circumstances traveling with your board sticking out the window! Best early in the a.m. before the trade-winds kick in. Good beachbreak conditions,if it gets real big 8'-10' + it breaks off the end of the rocks(rights).Their is also a river mouth break 1/2 mile further (left of macao)
facing the break.
