We'll be in Punta Cana for Holy Week & are not sure what's open in terms of sights. Should we rent a car & visit La Romana or Santo Domingo for sights?
What are the top sights to see? (we like everything: cathedrals, shopping, museums, nature parks, night clubs, etc.).
Thanks.

honestly, from thursday to sunday noon, try not to go out too much, especially don't drive... You shall stock on food beforehand, and plan for good activities within your house and garden...

right squat,
holy week is celebrated here, but a bit different than you are used to do.
holy week means party time, and since for the whole bavaro/punta cana area the only open public beach left is Macao Beach, it will be overcrowded by thousands every day with live music aso.
like mentioned above, DON"T drive a rental car there thursday-sunday, take a cab if you wanna be part of the party.
all motorized watersports will be closed friday-sunday by law, only exception are a few sportfishing charter boats running saturday offshore from the private punta cana marina.
have fun

Thanks Mike, More Info?

Thanks Mike for the info on Holy Week in Punta Cana. We're flying in on Monday so would you recommend any sights in other cities (Santo Domingo or La Romana) during the first few days of Holy Week then hanging out at our hotel Thurs. - Sunday? If so any recommendations for rental cars?

Altos de Chavon in La Romana is a beautiful place to hang out and a visit to our capital's colonial zone is also worth the trip.
you can do both as a guided excursion run by your touroperator or by rental car, what ever you prefer.
you will find rental car info at your hotel's front desk where the guest service is located, those guys will also give you a hand making the contact/phone call. we have several rent a car services in the area present at all resorts like avis, dollar, budget, national, alamo aso, rates vary depending on size of car ranging around $60.- - $70.- per day, it is highly recommended to pay a few extra bucks per day to cover a full insurance, don't forget to bring your drivers license, it's valid here during the time of your tourist-visa. always buckle up and don't use your cell phone while driving, tickets are expensive and specially during holy week the cops are looking for extra money. there's no problem to travel til thursday and enjoy the resort/beach over the weekend, good idea.
have fun
Mike

My husband and I are flying into Punta Cana Wednesday and out of Santo Domingo on the Monday after Easter. We were planning on driving from Punta Cana on Saturday afternoon to Santo Domingo. We've done this drive many times. Are you saying don't drive because there's a lot of traffic or what exactly ?
