I just read that the casino in Sosua has a disco that serves beer until 4am.How are they able to do that?I'm sure the rest of the restaurant and discos must be furious about this.

Where? I haven't seen them...Could you post some of these spots?

Guess you don't know that this being the most popular board for DR info that even the un-educated police read it. It's one way they can make a couple of bux on the side.

(yeah right, they should be so lucky to understand what we're saying)

Same way the Casino in Cabarete serves alcohol after hours -- Casinos are apparently exempt from the closing times.

Maybe some casinos are, but when I was there I went to Jaragua and Hispaniola and they weren't serving after 12:00 PM.

If someone knows after hour places please post them of at least PM them...I keep hearing about these after hour places, but when it comes down to it nobody can really confirm that they've been there. It's all hearsay...

As of now the only places where you can drink for sure (other than resorts) are Cabanas, but you have to throw your own party.

This ridiculous measure is killing the bar industry and creating more unemployment. I personally know about 10 people who are out of a job due to this. My favorite bar in Cotui had to close down and the town is a ghost town most days.

in the genuine tourist zones a blind eye,or back hander seems to be turned.
but when i was in santiago they stopped the serving of alcohol at the matu hotel and casino bang on time.

I was very suprised on the 2 holidays I have taken to Sosua that bars and clubs in a tourist area close down so early. I have been told this is due to new legislation - can anyone tell me if this is right?
During the week, everywhere seemed to shut at midnight, on weekends around 2am and on several occassion the police turned up and started picking up chairs from outside and taking them into the bars, is this normal procedure?

Sorry if this has been asked many times but I was surprised becuase I thought the local area would benefit more from longer hours for the tourists.

thanks, Binerds

I really think it has to do with the tourist area location.

I go to the gran Almirante a lot in Santiago, and they stop serving alcohol at 11:45 sharp!!!!!!!!!on the days they are supposed to stop at midnight!

This past jan I went to the Jaragua in Santo Domingo and they did serve me a drink at 1 am...but they at first said they couldnt. Then the pitboss came back 20 minutes later and asked if I still wanted a drink... I thought it was a favor, so i didnt ask for any more after that......

no it wasnt because he wanted to get me drunk, because I was only watching my GF play.

Apparently the Casinos are exempt from this rule. No doubt many casinos stop serving alcohol because alcohol is free. But the casinos in Cabarete and Sosua both have discos in the building, so they basically operate them as after hours bars and make a killing on all the people who get thrown out of normal bars at closing time. $150/beer at the Cabarete Casino disco.

i am sure the moto concho guys love this law. in stead of one ride to take someone home, they take them to the casino, then afterwards there is another ride home. the law is certainly not fair to the bar owners that have to close. i used to like it the old ways where they set their own hours. when not able to sleep at 5 am, at least there was somewhere to go .
