I'm planning a trip to the DR and would like to spend my time in the mountains, rather than on the beach. What would be the best area to head to? I've read a lot about Jarabacoa and that sounds nice. What about further south? Would there be places to stay in the mountains closer to Lago Enriquillo?

I would cast my vote for Jarabacoa. It is the most beautiful place in the universe! The best people in the world live there. Everyone is friendly and if you want a relaxed, refreshing time--that is the place. Good luck.

I prerfer Constanza - higher up in the moutains and some spectacular scenery. Try taking the road to San Jose de Ocoa - I once got a motoconcho driver to take me to El Monumento (geographic centre of the country) the views up there are great. Constanza has some good hotels and restaurants.
