Yes, actually it is my nephew who is having some difficulties at home and at school and we are considering this as an option in the hopes of reducing his at-risk behaviors. He is 17 years old and speaks English as well.

There's a school in Santiago (can't recall the name though...Is it New Horizons?). Maybe Hillbilly can chime in. The reason I know if because once I was flying into Santiago and this kid (teenager) was being sent down there with an escort by his parents because he was having problems up here. I was told it is not truly millitary, but it is run that way.

I do not recommend the New Horizon Youth Ministries school in Jarabacoa. While living in Jarabacoa for almost a year I met many of the school's "interns" and "supervisors". The school is geared to very troubled kids, with serious emotional problems, including heavy drug adiction, juvenile offenders, and sociopathic personalities. When they escape the premises, the local authorities hunt them down like criminals. However, I never saw evidence of mistreatment. In their supervised visits to town, I noticed some of the interns were obviously medicated with sedatives or other psychoactive drugs. Some of them admitted that they were regularly sedated. However, I never was able to find out the nature (name) of the medication. The "supervisors" act more like prison guards than teachers, and the atmosphere is akin to a juvenile detention center. I understand that many of the interns are referred to the school under plea deals with US juvenile authorities. If your nephew is only having some difficulties at home or school, it may be counterproductive to enclose him in such a facility. It is possible that by sending him there, he may acquire additional and more serious at-risk behavior.

forgive me for chiming in, but since you've posted on a public board, I'm assuming you're open to advice from sundry strangers.

If I were sincerely concerned about my kid and his environment, I would give serious consideration to moving back to my country of origin and trying a new environment, or a school back home. (That is assuming you are not Dominican and therefore have that option available to you).

Good luck to you. I know if my kid were having issues like that, it would be hell on me too.

Thank you for this info., I think its important for us that it isnt run like a juvenile detention center either given that he doesnt have violent behavior problems.

Your advice welcomed, thank you. Dont want to get into the parenting 101discussion too much though....Actually his new environment has been NY for the past 2 years and he is not very happy here, hence the deviant behavior (skipping school, suspension, fighting, bad company, possibly smoking, etc.)

Have you considered boarding school in USA?
Some parents do not know what a child has to face in some public school in NY.
I was lucky enough that my oldest daughter went to a boarding school. My son on the other hand (14) now in public high school this is the first year that he has not been bulied in school. I chose very carefully his high school.
I went to school in the DR. It is different to go to school here in some public school. It is like watching you back all the time.
I hope you find a solution for him really soon. It seems he is suffering.
You are not asking for opinion but I will look for options here.

Is the New Horizon school you refered to in Jarabacoa the same as Esquela Caribe? If so, it seems pretty hard core from the outside looking in. I have a friend who volunteered there for a time and he told me kids are in a "home-like setting" with a married couple as the "mother and father". The father is very much the head of the household and kids AND HIS WIFE are expected to ask his permission to use the restroom or walk across the room etc. I think that is as damaging as anything. Its all done with a religious justification that quite honestly just freaks me out. Just my opinion...and it might not even be the same place.

The Marion Institute

If you want to send him somewhere in the States send him to The Marion Institute in Marion, Alabama. Good military school which instills discipline and self reliance. You either conform to the system or you become smart enough to beat the system. Many of the kids are from the Caribbean, Central and South America.

There is Las Americas Military Academy in Santo Domingo vicinity. Have no other information.

I would think that a trip over to Riker's Island would be a worthwhile trip. As well as an evening sitting in the local precinct, watching what comes in the doors.
That is his destiny if he doesn't study. Point out that Leonel Fdez studied in a NYC H.S. and became president of the DR>>>>>

There are also boarding facilities at the Seventh Day Adventist school near Bonao...

Good Luck.

Thanks for all the input! It has been quite helpful. We have since decided to to not send him "away" but instead sent him to his young grandmother this summer in Mao who is using major TLC skills and open air sports activities as a "break" for his inner city youth crisis.

Hillbilly,

I am an alumni from the Colegio Adventista in Sonador Bonao.....

Caoba, I was a problem child (i didn't want to listen just hang out) and I was not "fixed" but there are no sure ways.... There was a lot of "resentment"(not sure if spelled correct)...I was there for 3 years I felt seperated from my brother and sister. I was among children with worst issues and there are even molested and drug addicts.

Consider the problem and look for all avenues before taking "the easy way out" meaning handing down the problem that took 17 yrs to create to a complete stranger.

I just saw this. OMG! I played for a team in the WFL that had our pre-season training camp there.

Earl, Marion is in the MIDDLE of nowhere. Selma is the closets "big city". A perfect place for disruptive kids to chill...and have a football training camp far away from distractions.

I know this thread is old, but I have searched Google for military schools and found militaryschools411 (http://www.militaryschools411.com) They have an online resource for anything you need to know about military schools and directory list for military schools in each state. Hope this helps anyone looking for a good military school.
