Just returned to Santiago , and when I purchased my tourist card was told they only accept dollars . I usually pay in pesos . When I questioned this practice the person working at the counter stated " This is an American company ."

Now Im a newbie but not that new . My ride showed up so unfortunatly I could not continue my questioning of this practice .

Doesnt the Dominican Republic Goverment get this money for tourism ?

Has anyone else had a similar experience ?

Or was paying in dollars my welcome home present to the DR after a months absence ?

You dont have to answer the last question unless you want to .

I think the tourist card and departure tax are supposed to be paid in US dollars.

I'm sure there are some employees who will accept pesos and cover the dollars themselves if it is worth their while.

Sort of like how the Dominican duty free shops will gladly take my leftover pesos at 38 to the dollar.

And lets not forget to say 'gracias' if they go out of their way to accept the 10 pound as replacement for U$10.
