Hi Everyone,

I have only just found this forum and it has been like a god send. Me and my husband are flying out next Wednesday out first time on holiday on our own and we are going to the above resort. Does anyone know anything about it good or bad?

Also how much roughly would it be for a taxi from the airport as i am not overly fussed about getting on the coach?

Also i have been watching the weather on BBC weather and it seems it rains alot does this mean we are going to get wet all day or might i get a light tan at least
;)

Thank you for this forum

Sarah

i was staying there from may 12th to may 19th its in the end of cabarete taxi would be about 20 $, to leave the resort to go into cabarete can be about 300 pesos about 10$. Hope you guys are low maintenance as this isnt a 5 star resort there are 2 restaurants a la carte and depending if its busy or not they are opened. The buffet basicly always has the same things, there are 3 pools but the biggest one is the one from camino del sol! The staff is very nice and very welcoming and ready to help.
Make sure to unplug ure phone in the room at night as it doesnt stop ringing, rooms are ok but they have no safe deposit box (u have to pay extra) as well as no mini fridge . If your not too high maintenance it is a ok hotel if u are then i would suggest to go elsewhere

I wouldnt say we are high maintenance as such we just like it clean and safe. Surely we are going at the good part of the season end of june to middle of july?

I really hope this is ok because it was a present from my husband for my 30th birthday because i am 30 whilst i am there :ermm:

What sort of trips is there to do and roughly how much? My hubby wants to go in a helicopter but i am a little bit scared :surprised

There are many tours you can take like the safari , horse riding, paradise island, snorkeling and they all vary between 35$ us to 100USD there are different tour cies right outside the hotel and just make sure u bargen when ure there as they do try to make it more expensive. Ive done 2 of them the 27 waterfalls and the snorkeling wich were both nice, i had paid 35USD for each.
it is a safe and clean place, but just not for high maintenance people..... There is a casino right outside the little complex that i do suggest you go to ! there are some bars around outside the hotel were u can always grab a little something to eat. Do go to cabarete one day !

Sazzabelle,
Be very careful in the ocean as there's a strong undertow in that area. Swimming is better in Cabarete bay, just a short 3km taxi ride to the west.

I'd suggest going into Cabarete early in your trip, as you may find yourself wanting to return several times for the shopping, restaurants or nightlife. If the wind is good, a lot of kitesurfing that's fun to watch during the day toward the western end of the bay.

In Cabarete there are many beachside bars and restaurants where you can buy a drink or two and sit for hours if you like. Lax & Onno's are good places for just passing time in the late afternoon, early evening.

Also, the town of Sosua is about another 15 minutes to the west. It's worth a trip to the beach there. Nice calm water for swimming, easy to rent beach chairs, and many small beachside restaurants to grab a drink or a bite to eat during the day.

I guess the theme of my post is "get out and explore a little". You'll enjoy your time more!

Check the weather reports for Puerto PLata and you will get a good idea of what you will face.

This time of year it is hot and humid and every couple of days the clouds will roll in late afternoon to early evening for a thunder storm. Don't worry you will get plenty of sunshine too.

Bring lots of sunscreen and mosquitto repellent with at least 22% DEET content. It is good to bring a small umbrella as well.

For tours - check Isaira Tours - Dominican Republic in advance. You can prebook if you like or contact them when you arrive. They can arrange whatever you like and are very well respected here.

Sarah,

1. Draw cash (Peso's) from the ATM. (Im guessing you are Brits if you're watching BBC weather). Some people say take dollars and exchange as you need them. I guarantee you, after seven trips in 16 months, drawing directly via a UK debit card is best value. If you have anything 'odd' happen with the ATM make a note of the time/place/date etc to check everything was okay later. Most of the time it is (I've never had a problem).
2. That said, many trips are in dollars so take some. I recommend the Monster Safari as being a great trip for people who've never been to DR before. A bit expensive (US$80 if I recall correctly, not sure) but well worth it. The Waterfalls is another good trip but you need to be a reasonable swimmer and I'm not sure I'd want to do it after heavy rain.
3. Cabarete is great. The kitesurfing is fantastic, I can watch them all day!

If you have a decent SLR with a long lens, you will get some of the lads showing off for you once they see your camera! That might not be the case when the 'professionals' are on (grr... I'm missing the comp)
4. Taxi is US$30 to Cabarete itself, so you shouldn't pay more than that MAX from the airport.

Have a great time...

Oh hi,

That picture is fantastic and looks like the our maid's son that we met at Villa Rosada, I forget his name but he won last year I guess, he is the nephew of Jose-Luis Cirraco which is the brother of Carmen (the maid). If it is, he is incredible. so is Jose-Luis and we received private lessons from them all week long as part of our stay.

Great Photo, THANKS for the Wonderful Memories!!

There's a ice cream store at the east end of town. Maybe 10 min. walk. Sound funny but have great German Bratwurst (sp) on Wed. or Thurs. People in town are great. Seems to be a lot of German/ Swiss Expats in town. Most speak english. Walk around and talk to people. You'll get suggestions on many things to do. The rooms will be ok and you'll have a great time, just remember to laugh, some thing don't make sence if you don't live here. Spend the money to rent a safe. Make a copy of your passport, carry it with you and leave your passport in the safe. Good luck and have fun.If you have any questions we can help with, PM us.
