Can anyone recommend a good place in Santo Domingo for my wife to get a bone scan (Densitometria)? Lots of medical places have it on their sign, but quality varies greatly. We would like to know the name of a good one (address and or phone number, too, if possible)

When you set up the appointment, ensure that they scan both the spine and hip for this study as both should be evaluated for osteoporosis.

Some places outside of the DR, only image one area.

CEDIMAT Is The BEST!

Dear Ken,
As you may know,I worked there for over 10 years!
I strongly suggest that you and your wife get an appointment with Doctor Catharine Schiraldi at CEDIMAT!!! She is an American Internal Medicine Specialist. She is a great doctor! She could be your personal contact at CEDIMAT. It is always a good idea to meet a good Doctor,"BEFORE" you have any serious problems! She can do some diagnostic studies for you both,to let you know if there are any "problems" to take care of now,or watch out for in the future.
Tell her that I recommended her. She is my personal physician in the DR!

Tom

Thanks, Tom. We already have an internal medicine specialist at Clinica Abreu. We have been patients of Dr. Francisco Contreras for close to 20 years. However, I have heard great things about CEDIMAT from you and others, so if we find ourselves doing more there than just a bone scan for Barbara, then I will certainly want to have a contact there. Having your endorsement of the doctor is a big help, and being able to say that you told me to see her will be helpful, also.

Cedimat is the closest thing I've seen to a "real" hospital in the DR. I had my stent implanted there and experienced a professional approach to advanced medicine found in most hospitals in 1st world countries. I highly recommend it.

My wife had her bone scan Tuesday at CEDIMAT. Thanks to all who gave us this recommendation. They checker hip, spine and knee. The cost was RD$2,300. Service very professional and I highly recommend it to anyone.

She didn't have a prescription, so they took her to the office of the Internal Medicine doctors and the secretary there wrote out a prescription.

I found the people at CEDIMAT very helpful

If you go there, best to have somebody with you that can handle the paying while you wait your turn to be tested. The paying process takes quite a bit of time as you go to a large room that has numbered desks along one wall and cashiers along the other. You wait by the door uintil a woman stationed there directs you to one of the numbered desks, where your information is taken and and recorded. Then you stand in line and wait to pay a cashier. Because most of the people in line are Dominicans using their insurance, this wait can be long. However, I asked a young man who seemed to be stationed there which window I went to for a cash payment. He pulled me out of the line and sent me immediately to the closest cashier. I know how much this helped because the woman I was behind in the line came into the office for her bone scan just when my wife and I were leaving.

Bone scans are given between 8 am and 4 pm. No appointments given, you wait your turn. But a bone scan is done quickly, 10 minutes more or less, so the wait isn't long. We finished about noon and the girl in office said that the results would be ready at 4 the next day. However, when we told her we were returning to Sosua in the morning, she said to come back at 2 pm.
