I have a friend that is suffering from allergies here. My guess it's all the construction going on in the city right now.

Can anyone recommended a good allergy specialist in Santo Domingo?

Anyone else suffering here, if so, what meds are you taking, brand, cost etc?

Thanks.

Allergies are produced by hypersensitivity to a substance. It can manifest in many ways, such as sneezing, eczema, digestive disorders, etc. There are many over-the-counter meds for allergies. What kind of symptoms is your friend suffering?

Runny nose, that lasts 4-5hrs then goes away.

If this is not a chronic situation, then I would take a pill which contains pseudoephedrine (available in many over-the-counter cold and sinus medications). However, this may make him drowsy. Now, if he would rather go alternative, and willing to try a natural medicine, I would suggest drinking a large batido (blended drink) made with horseradish, aloe vera, watercrest, and bees honey (a shot of rum will not hurt, and probably make the batido more effective and palatable ;).

It could be the air pollution or something he's eating. Boosting his inmune system would help. That drink that Mirador suggests sounds like a good start. Embutidos like salami, should be avoided, only God knows what they put in there. Eat more natural foods. What about lots of papaya, this cleanses the digestive tract even kills parasites.

my allergies (hay fever, pollen) actually get better in SD. i think because the tropical pollens are heavier and therefore less airborne. it may be a sensitivity to going in and out of air-conditioning causing the runny nose or it may be the first symptoms of a cold. benedryl or any antihistamine will stop the runny nose but may make you sleepy.

Does this 4 to 5 hours of runny nose happen only when your friend is at the same location? You mentioned a lot of construction so if it's dust there isn't much you can take for it except keep windows closed and turn on the air conditioning and keep everything dust free.

Best to find out what it's from before taking over the counter medication

I would just take an antihistamine. These just supress the bodys reaction to the substance. They work for pretty much everything

Claritin is good.

If you have a friend coming from the states, have them bring some WalMart generic brand (Loratadine), same stuff, but for lot less money.

Claritin is an antihistamine. Antihistamines prevent sneezing, runny nose, itching and watering of the eyes, and other allergic symptoms.

Claritin = Loratadine

Robert,

I recommend Dr. Antonio J. Castillo, 809-541-1991. His office is in Centro Medico Abel Gonzalez on Abraham Lincoln. He trained in the US and was in private practice there for 19 years. Excellent doctor and a member of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology

There is a good chance that it is a reaction to the polluted air, even moreso because of the construction. I noticed I was more conjested in Santo Domingo than in Canada, and I can tell you that the air is a hell of a lot cleaner in Ottawa. I noticed i wasn't the only one, and that quite a few people had the same symptoms.

Generic Claritin (Loratadine), besides being effective and not causing drowsiness, is dirt cheap (at least in the US). About .10 USD per 24 hour tablet, and they are tiny, so if they are a lot more expensive in the DR, it would be simple for a friend to mule in several months supply.

No cats! Actually, cats are bad for you. Have you read the following?....

Parasite Common to Cats Linked to Human Psychosis

"Toxoplasma gondii (T.gondii), a common parasite found in the stomach of cats, may alter human behavior and lead to psychotic symptoms similar to those displayed by persons with schizophrenia, according to a study by researchers from the Stanley Medical Research Institute and Johns Hopkins University Medical Center."

Maybe that explains it!!!

My fifteen kitties would never cause me any harm!

I'm just kidding.

But seriously, can you tell me more about your blended drink, and where you learned it?

Trial and error, with willing guinea pigs. Just kidding ;). Actually, its stuff us folk healers talk amongst ourselves, you know, sharing tricks of the trade ;).

Gotcha

Okay, I'll trust you with your secrets. I'm scared to try it though. I use a lot of herbal remedies, etc. but I'm a little whimpy about stuff that tastes bad. ;)
