There is a good chance my friend will not be able to make a trip with me to Cabarete for three days. Any advice from fellow travelers on whether or not it is a cool place to hang out alone? I h ave been there several times with friends, but never alone. Any thoughts, recommendations?

are you a man or a woman.....I think for a woman to go alone to that area, she would have to be a smart cookie, wise to all the scams and tricks plied onto tourists in the area. I think even a man would have a better vacation if he had at least one wing man, to hang with or have in the area.

I actualy prefer to travel solo. You have already been there a few times...so you know the deal with the scammers and tigres etc. you DO become more of a target when solo tho. It is slow season now...so its not as easy to just meet fellow travelers.

GO! its only 3 days!

I am a man by the way, so I realize that a solo woman may have a lot of problems there. I have spent a lot of time in Santiago so I know about the scammers. That isn't the issue for me. The issue would be having fun there. I know my way around over there pretty much, but never went alone. Going to relax and then hit the clubs/bars at night.

I have travelled solo on many occassions and had no problems.Just be mindfull of your surroundings and don't let yourself get to drunk.

Solo in April was fun

I went solo for a week in April and had fun. Pretty crowded though so it was easy to meet people.
Made a few quick friends at the restaurants on the beach and would chat with people at the bars if i was feeling sociable.

I definitely watched my step heading home from the casino or beach clubs at night.

Yep, when you are solo you are much more of a target for petty theft, scams, etc. It really makes a big difference. But everyone gave the best advice not too over drink. And you never know, maybe you?ll meet a fellow traveler or even another gringo who works in Cabarete to hang out with. Have a safe enjoyable stay!

Thanks to all!!!

Thanks for all the responses and info.. Yeah I will watch the overdrinking, because it tends to happen for me on vacation, lol, but there is a chance my friend from Santiago I am visiting will go for a few days. He is Dominican so it helps a lot when he is with me. I will be at the Cabarete Beach Houses at Nanny Estates.. It is very relaxing and safe over there.

When are you going? I will be staying at NE also, but in August. You should be fine solo as long as you use common sense. I've just decided to go solo on some of the day tours. My friends may not all be able to do the things that I'd like to do but I'm not going to let that hold me back .

Nanny Estates is a great place to stay as is the Valero Beach or Ocean Dream etc. etc. Travelling alone in the Cabarete/Sosua area is perfectly safe. I spent 5 1/2 months alone and being female riding my mountain bike. Like anywhere in the world common sense should be used.

We've bought property in Cabarete and I've had six out of my last eight trips out there have been solo, with five of them, to Cabarete. So, to re-itterate as already said, don't over indulge and keep your wits about you and you'll be fine. Also to add, if a 'pretty' (or even not so pretty) girl approaches you at night, she's after your money, one way or another! And as a single bloke, you WILL be approached by them! Just say 'no' firmly (unless that's what you are looking for of course!)

The main bar areas on the beach are the easiest places to get talking to people (and your hotel I'd guess).
