Dominican ladies Softball team at USA Cup

(Oklahoma City, OK)

Despite very wet field conditions at Hall
of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, OK, the Canadian Senior Women’s
National Team was able to pull out a 3-0 win over the Dominican
Republic in their first round-robin game of the KFC World Cup
of Softball.
The win was sparked by two key players who led Canada
to victory, as Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) went four-for-four
– only a homerun away from the cycle – while driving in two runs
and pitcher Dione Meier (Saskatoon, SK) went the distance allowing
only four hits and one walk in seven innings of work.

The game started as a pitcher’s duel as Canadian starter Meier
and Dominican starter Missy Penna battled back and forth through
four innings. In the fifth inning, Canada was finally able to
open the scoring after stranding four runners on base through
the first four innings. With two outs and runners on second and
third, Lawrick came to the plate and delivered a tripled down
the right field line to score Canada’s first two runs. Alison
Bradley (Pinkerton, ON) followed with a single to score Lawrick,
pushing the score to 3-0.

The Dominicans were unable to muster any offence off Meier and
the strong Canadian defense in their three remaining at-bats,
securing the victory for the red and white.

Lawrick hit a single, two doubles and a triple for Canada. She
was only two feet away from hitting for the cycle as her second
double of the game in the top of the seventh inning was hit off
the wall. Bradley contributed Canada’s only other hit.

Meier held the Dominicans in check, throwing seven scoreless
innings while allowing four hits and one walk with four strikeouts.
Her counterpart Penna also went the distance, allowing three
earned runs on five hits, while walking five batters and striking
out 3.

DOM went 0-5 in the series. I saw part of the bame against USA, and Missy gave up--before I switched channels--7 straight singles....blew the game witde open. I kept looking for Wud but was not sure.

Also watched two USA-Japan games....And a Canada game....

Missy will only get better, if properly coached...

I guess there is a big difference between being an all-state high school pitcher and then facing international competition!
