the baseball team beat up on hapless Brazil. Handball lost their goalie, but won.

Why hasn't anyone questioned the startling absence of the "self proclaimed great" Marco D?az in the Open Water Swim???? It was only 10 k, a piece of cake for a guy that swam across the Straits of Gibraltar!!

I guess the government did not pony up enough money for him to make the trip..

I wonder if Paris Goico will score well in archery. Fingers crossed for the kid.

Volleyball (womens) is out of the games after winning the gold in 2003. The team got old, hurt, and was just not up to the former level...

Medal hopes are now in table tennis and Judo....and maybe boxing and karate.

Track and field are also "maybes"...

Looks like he's saving his energy to swim the Hudson River. God knows that he'll need it to get through all that muck! :p

Not as bad as you think.

Pollution the_facts
The Hudson's Rebirth Needs Sustained Vigilance

The Hudson River was once treated as the region's sewer. Industrial development, rampant growth, raw sewage discharges, and toxic contamination drove all but the hardiest away from the river. However, in the 1960s, the fights of the original Hudson River fishermen signaled a new era, not only on their river, but nationally as the modern environmental movement took hold. The legal battle to save Storm King Mountain on the Hudson-- waged to preserve a precious scenic resource and protect threatened fish spawning habitat-- was the first major environmental case. This case gave citizens "standing" in court to challenge government decisions based on aesthetic and environmental impacts and led to the enactment of the National Environmental Policy Review Act (NEPA). The landmark passage of the Clean Water Act (CWA) in 1972 made it illegal to discharge pollutants, whether liquids or solids, into waterways without permits. Perhaps more than any other law, the CWA heralded the end of uncontrolled dumping into the Hudson and its tributaries. The CWA also importantly contained a citizen suit provision, which enabled groups like Riverkeeper to stop polluters in their tracks.

Three decades later, the Hudson has once again retained its status as the region's gem. Anglers, boaters and bathers flock to its waters to experience the wonders of this great river. By and large, industries and municipalities have ceased their polluting ways and have developed a respect for the resource. However, sustained vigilance is needed to ensure that the great gains in water quality are not reversed. Many river segments, particularly in urban communities and areas of sprawl growth, remain threatend. And with government enforcement of environmental laws spiraling downward at the state and federal level, Riverkeeper is working overtime to bring violators to justice.

A.H., you have to remember that the Hudson River is very long. The section of it near NYC is still a mess due to many years of polluting and neglect from local government, individuals, manufacturing and processing plants, and the shipping industry.

I know we are off topic, but your info is dated and should be updated.
Things have changed and are changing. The following article is about the 7th Annual Triathlon of New York City that's being held on July 22, 2007. You should take a dip....:cheeky:

Water Quality

Come on in, the water?s nice! The historic Hudson River is the swim venue for the Nautica New York City Triathlon. The Hudson River is the cleanest it has been in 30 years and is considered bathing and recreation quality.

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) monitors the testing on a weekly basis in the Hudson River to ensure the water meets the Triathon's strict standards.
