For those of you that live in the DR and all those that plan to...... What is the best plan for emergency health care? Does anyone have experience / plans on owning a defibrillators and/or training those nearby on its use? What kind of plan can be made to get to a hospital quickly since 911 is not an option? Can health insurance be purchased for a short term stay (one month or less)? What experiences have people had,who had large medical bills, with regard to their USA provider covering them in the DR?

I have used the search function, but am still confused. As advice may be geographically specific, the area in question is the Santiago Airport STI area.

Thanks

I would be interested in similar info for the Cabarete/Sosua area. A reliable 24/7 number to call for health emergency is what I have in mind.

Is there no one willing to share their medical emergency number? A clinic? A private ambulance service? It's not like I'm asking for how to access your favorite stretch of open beach. How about it old hands?

You may find the State Department link with medical info useful. There is a list of Dominican doctors, medical centers and emergency services. There is also a list of medical insurance companies. Good luck.

Most Helpful

Hidalgo,
Your website is most helpful, thank you.
However, living in the DR, I believe one must be as self sufficient as possible
for any emergency, as things happen fast and unexpectedly for the most part and one is not at their sharpest in emergencies, normally.
I always say chance favors the prepared mind, and having an emergency list of numbers from every source, including your's (very good by the way) is vital to survival when the chips are stacked against you.
This brings to mind: please register with your appropriate embassy/consulate if you live here, it's just one more thing to do and may not even help much, but it is one more base to cover which is easy to do and free. There are forms on respective country's websites from their state departments. Use them.
Unless of course, you don't ever want to be found! :bunny::bunny:

The delay in replying is because these questions have been asked many times before and you can find many helpful answers if you use the search button. However my good health insurance here provides me with a card which gives all emergency nos and I have 3 paramedics/ambulance nos in my cel.

Your generosity in sharing valuable and possibly life saving information is - to say the least - underwhelming. I won't forget it.

I'm quoting here a post from Ken from this thread http://www.dr1.com/forums/best-dr/39221-best-hospital-dr.html

The information is for Cabarete / Sosua / Puerto Plata. For Santiago, things are different.

Paddy, if rapid response by a trained team in response to a 911 call is important to you, then don't move to the DR. Service like that does not exist. When you live here, you just have to accept the fact that if trained medical care is required within the first few minutes of a heart attack, for example, then you are a goner unless God chooses to let you live another day.

I live in Sosua. In case of a medical emergency, one way or another (including taxi), the victim needs to be gotten to Centro Medico Bournigal for emergency care. Figure about an hour, including the confusion, etc., of figuring out who to call, etc.

Or you can call Servi Med in Cabarete, and a doctor will get to you within an hour. But if you need any medical service, he will arrange to get you to Centro Medico Bournigal.

You can stay at Centro Medico Bournigal, or go to a hospital in Santiago or Santo Domingo by ambulance once you are stabilized, or even by helicopter if your condition warrants it. Since we established all our medical contacts at Clinica Abreu in Santo Domingo, that is where we would go once able to make the trip.

If this doesn't sound like what you are looking for in your retirement years, then you should reconsider your plan to move to the DR.

I've not heard of anyone doing the thing with the defibrillators and/or training those nearby on its use.

You nastiness and sarcasm wont bring you many people wishing to advise you. Perhaps my last post wasnt clear. Its pointless me giving you the emergency contact numbers I have as they were provided by my insurance company here, and to use their services I have to quote the reference number provided. I was merely trying to tell you that when you pay for the right health insurance here the services are available. I have used them twice without problems.

If you are trying to obtain emergency services/ambulances without paying for health cover, it does not happen here. As Kens post has advised then you shouldnt move here, this country is not for the likes of you mightymouth

And of all of those, IF I were to have a problem in Puerto Plata, I would call a personal friend first and then maybe the Cl?nica Bournigal.

Major issues have to be taken care of in Santiago. Just look what happened to the 54 year old former Police Chief....a heart attack, taken to the cl?nica and dead....not a good record IMO.

defibrillators? I have seen them used on my son to no avail....Movi-Med in Santiago has ambulances with "trained" EMT guys....so they say.

If you are going to live here, you need to develop your own list of trusted medical people. Plan ahead...

What works for me will probably not work for you since you do not know anyone yet...but when you do, then you'll have your own safety network.

HB

I forgot to mention that NONE of the above numbers will come and get you, so you sort of have to get to the medical facility on your own. So make friends with a taxi driver or two...

Thanks for the link, list of numbers and other advice, all helpful. Since that new hospital in Santiago is near my area of interest, I will see what they have to offer.

You're sounding curmudgeonly today! But your advice is well taken and I'll get out and see if I can run into a few folks. I'd particularly like to get to know one 'o them dang taxi drivers one day.

If the poster is closer to Santiago than POP, then all of those numbers are worth a row of pee-pee holes in the snow!!!!!

In Santiago, now we;re talkin', let's see..
Hospital Regional Universitario Jos? Mar?a Cabral y B?ez: 809 724 4100
Hospital Metropolitano (HOMS) --829 747 2222.

The Big four:
Cl?nica Corominas:
809 581 1171

Centro M?dico Cibao:
809 582 6661

Clinica Materno-Infantil:
?? Can't find it right now.

Uni?n M?dica del Norte:
809 226 8686

there are a couple of second tier clinics with doctors that are good in certain fields.

If you have a special field of interest, let me know...

HB, not so curmudgeony today....
