Hi guys,

Where can you go in Santiago to get a guaranteed good meal?

- Last night I went to Rancho Steak House and the bread they served was stale, along with the food not being great.

- I've been similarly disappointed by the food at Camp David (which does have a spectacular location that compensates somewhat)

- I find the food at Pez Dorada to be not that great

- I've had world class chinese at the new chinese restaurant on las carreras, but last time I was there, it was also disappointing.

- Pasta House was great in the beginning, then it went downhill and has now closed.

I really liked the food at Maroma, but they also apparently closed down recently.

Which are the top restaurants in Santiago at the moment?

I have been to Rancho Steak house and I agree that the quality of food can very a great deal. the first time I ate there I had a thick cut steak and it was one of the best I had had anywhere in quite a while, cooked to perfection. However, the last time I ate there the steak I had tasted like liver and I don't know when I will return.

The problem is that with many restaurants it depends on who is watching the kitchen that night.

This topic was discussed fairly recently in the following thread.

I would like to know the latest as well so maybe after you try a few you could give us your critique.

I know in that plaza on juan pablo duarte that azb posted a foto of there was an italian restaurant that I've been to. I thought it was good, but I don't remember the name. Maybe someone here knows it?

Kukara Macara [spelling?], just bellow "El Monumento", whilst certainly somewhat of a touristy place, has my vote so far. I had excellent meat there on repeated occasions in the last months. Price is OK too, especially when considering the quality of the base product. No, it's not the US aged type of beef, but still very tender and tasty.

I enjoy eating at Paparazzo, though I do consider it slightly overpriced.

I have been to Roots Restaurant in Plaza Optimus a few times and enjoyed it though the first time I went the owner was there and the experience was about a 9 out of 10, the next time I went he wasn't and it was a 4. Haven't been back.

The other restaurant/cafe in Plaza Optimus (Cafe Capresso) is great also if you can deal with the crowds, it's pretty small and alot of people know how good it is now. The food and drink is always really high quality and the menu has a surprising amount of variety.

If the Tratoria da Carlo is still open then that is a great place for a quiet evening, but as Hillbilly mentioned in another post it is a secret for Santiagueros only so I won't post the location, Santiagueros PM me for details.

best kept secret and a private place to eat in peace.
The owner (Angel) will treat you like a friend not a customer.

"The best restaurant in Santiago was the one Hillbilly mentioned. Trattoria Da Carlo"
No sign, no indications, nobody walking in the street can see it is is a restaurant...for insider only.
Look the Grand almirante hotel Casino, take the street on your left hand,
one minute walking down, the first street on your right, the second or third house on your right hand this is La Trattoria

AZB: Could this be the son of Angel Zimbr?n??? A Mexican family that moved here over 35 years ago??? I knew they had a house in that area.....good people...

Used to own Shell Monumental.

I see self appointed "don" Pedro has spilled the beans...nice going..ugh!

Hillbilly, I am not sure. I have only met him once and the next time I went there, he was out of town. I do know that they are from salcedo. The food is excellent and, prices are reasonable and very friendly environment.

Followup:

- Yesterday I tried one of the sandwiches from supermercado nacionale. Christian is apparently on vacation, but the sandwich I had was superb, far better than la campagna! Its counter intuitive to buy sandwiches from a supermarket, but they are awesome. Great call Chip!

- Today I passed by Trattoria Da Carlo. Now I remember I was taken to dinner there by Escott about 4 years ago. There are no prices on the menu. When I went with Escott, I remember our food then as being not that great. And I was absolutely shocked when the bill came with how expensive it was - and this was in a time when the peso was very weak - but it was super expensive in dollars. Neither of us were impressed and I haven't been back. But given the rave reviews here, I'll give them another chance.

I've been collecting everyone's recommendations and will continue to try them all out over the coming weeks.

Thanks everyone,

Adrian

3. Mezzaluna is great its on avenida benito juarez in villa olga.....but as of 2 months ago it was under renovations im not sure about now havent passed by in a while.
4. tiriguillo is good and small i would not really consider it a restaurant but i guess you could...great food good prices its on avenida metropolitana right in front of banco caribe.
