Moving to the Dominican in October.

Can you tell me who the satelite TV providers are?

Can I bring my current satelite dish with me and hook it up?

If not I have been told it would be less expensive for me to buy my satelite dish in the US and bring it with me to the DR.

What are the prices for satelite dishes in DR?

What kind of rates are being charged in the DR for satelite service?

Is Satelite the service any good?

What kind of satelites are used there?

is mikehunt there

What Janin is trying to point out to you, Rick, is that "the Dominican" is a person, not a country.
http://www.dr1.com/forums/clown-bin/65924-whats-worse-thatn-saying-dominican.html

the guy was asking a simple question, and is clearly not as familiar with the language as you.........cut him some slack! I understood the question perfectly, given that he is using the DR1 web-site he's more than likely referring to the Dominican republic...duh!!!!!
For people that profess to live in the DR, one would suspect you would be a little more relaxed and helpful....your responses were unwarranted!

DR Rick, you will find that all satellite television comes from the major providers. Our expert, Eddie has retired but if you use the search function, you'll find a stack of older posts on the issue. Thing is, as I understand it, once you have a dish up and running, you're into the dark world of hacking the services to get a signal

I do believe that you are mentally handicapped, Mike.
The OP does not have a language problem.
His English looks fine to me.

As for cutting him some slack, you should cut us some slack too.

I am pleased to hear that you understood the question perfectly, yet you have no answers.
Of what use are you?

As for professing that we live here, do you think we're faking it?
Maybe we live in Bangladesh and just come on to a DR website to play?
BTW: You rude post was unwarranted.

I Appoligize! I Stand Corrected!

Wow, never meant to insult anyone. Just trying to get a little information.

In my defense. When my friends are asked, who are from this beautiful country, where there from, they all respond "The Dominican"

But now that I have been disciplined for making an error in my grammar, can I get someone to assist me with the question at hand?

Again, I apologize!

I'll try again! With Corrections.

Moving to the Dominican Republic in October.

Grey Zone

It all depends where one lives.
A lot of places have cable TV at reasonable subscription costs (300 - 500 RD$).
To bring a dish may be cumbersome because one needs large dishes here (up to 6 ft).
And as said, many providers operate in a grey zone thus the signal is not guaranteed...

OK, now that we know where you're moving to ;) have a look at the thread again. There is useful information in there. Please use the search function as there is a stack of information on the board about this very specific topic.

Can you tell me who the satellite TV providers are?

Providers for installations? Which area? For signal, the same ones that you get in North America.

Can I bring my current satellite dish with me and hook it up?

Don't know. What dish do you have?

If not I have been told it would be less expensive for me to buy my satellite dish in the US and bring it with me to the DR.

There are alternatives in the DR and DR dishes work well for television. Installations here should be hurricane proof. What dish do you have? You'll have to figure out if your current dish will work and if it is worth while to pay freight to transport it to the DR. Why don't you first ask for quotes from some of the local providers?

Is Satellite the service any good?

You'll be getting the normal services that you get in North America, e.g., Dishnetwork. I believe it is. Sometimes a little weather interference but if you install well and point well and hack the service well, then it works.

What kind of satellites is used there?

You mean the satellites up in the sky? Those that Loral and Hughes and Pansat send up there? Why is this important?

You need a 6ft dish to pick up Dish Network or Direct TV. You should have an account in the US as these services are 'legally' not available here and then bring the box over with you. Seeing that legally, you are not supposed to be viewing this stuff outside of the US, you could just opt for a FTA receiver and watch Dish network.

You will basically have to go with dishnetwork cardless FTA receivers, a 6foot dish (maybe 2 depending how many and which channels you want), and find a satellite guy that will change the codes for you whenever they 'zap' the signal. This happens anywhere from once per week to once per 3 months. It takes a skilled satellite guy about 10 minutes to fix with a laptop. Now to get him to show up on time is another question.

The good thing is you will receive all PPV, sports, movies, porno, everything. And you don't pay a monthly or yearly subscription. The bad thing is, you are at the mercy of the satellite guy, when he shows up (all receivers get zapped at the same time so you will be out of service for several days), and how much you have to pay him per visit.

Or just enter the codes manually. Took the sat guy 6 weeks last time to turn up, hence now I have a little desktop thing that tells me the new codes as they are updated. Not that I use this informtion to watch Dish Network illegally, I just like seeing the numbers rolling. :)

Additionally, if anyone knows where I can purchase a USB to null-modem cable with a female end, it would be appreciated.

And you don?t even have to enter all the new numbers for the keys when they do not auto-roll.

Just turn on auto-roll, let it get the keys, turn auto-roll off, then replace the first byte of each key with the correct one. That is normally the only byte that is wrong.

Of course if that is your only exercise as a couch potato, then you might opt to enter all 16 bytes for each of the two keys manually to keep in shape.

I got a laptop now, guess I might just try to learn to do this myself. The problem is, who is gonna teach me, because the satellite guy is not gonna do it and lose the business.

Well, looks like too many people must know it was only the first byte that was wrong with the auto-rolls.

For the COOLSAT the following seems to correct now.

Now, all bytes are correct except the SECOND byte, so modify the above procedure to make the correction to the second byte of each key. At least that the way it is with the Coolsat FTA.

Guys .... by a Viewsat Ultra ( original Not Clone ) and you can update the receiver with a USB Memory stick. I had the same problems with this guys making money for changing codes which are free anyway until I started doing it all myself including installations.

If you need any you can find them on my little site for the receivers I'm selling. dishimpact.com

If any of you has two receivers and they freeze up when both are on, there are nice switches which will prevent that from happening as well as new LNB's which gets you 130 international channels more on Echo 7 including 3 german channels.

Have fun ...
