Guzman lawyers say that the various documents for marriage have to be legal transcripts prepared by the Consulate of the country of origin of the foreigner. I don?t live in the UK anymore. I have dominican cedular and Residency and certainly do not want the expense of having to fly back just for that.
How do I overcome this problem and can I not do my declaration of being single direct in spanish ?

Thank you for your help.

You can do it all here. I lived here and was a resident with a cedula and then married a Dominican. My lawyer here arranged translation of everything for me - no problem. Just get yourself a lawyer

Married in Sosua

I'm a US citizen living in Sosua. The first week in August we went to the Municipal Building here in Sosua with the following documents:

1 copy of my birth certificate (in English )
1 copy of my divorce papers (in English)
1 copy of my passport
1 copy of my cedula

I asked what else we needed to get married and was told I needed a notarized statement in Spanish that said I was single and copies of my wittinesses cedulas.

Dr Guzman's office provided the statement.

Miguelina and I were married here 25 August 2007

And lived happily ever after.
Congrats, Viejo.
She's a fine fine woman and you're not a bad egg yourself.

I have two friends who want to go to the DR to get married. I have read the posts as to what is required. Both are US citizens, one divorced and one widowed. They do not want to stay at a resort and use a resort package. It appears that the simplest procedure would be to get an attorney to prepare the necessary documents. Any suggestions on who to use in Sosua and if anything needs to be done by them before they arrive in Sosua in October? Thanks

yeah, right,
but the original poster seems to be a UK citizen living here on the island as a resident, and doesn't want to fly back home to get the needed papers.
that's no prob neither.
your UK embassy/consulate here on the island(should be in santo domingo) get's you all those papers over here and you even can arrange the translation in spanish with them, you just have to present your guilty UK passport there and tell them what kind of papers you need.
and your guilty UK passport you should have, otherwise your residency would be a wothless fake, you're resident, not citizen.
good luck
Mike

I don't know that the UK Embassy would see it had a role to play in acquiring someone's birth certificate or divorce papers from the UK. I think the person would be expected to do this for themselves by post/Fedex if they didn't want to make the journey. Guilty passport notwithstanding ;).

Thanks Whirlybird and others. I luckly had all my original documents and my local lawyer tells me that she will get them translated and officialised (?) sufficient for the officals to accept, including my single staus declaration for RD$ 4000 inclusive. After all this marvellous help you?ve given me I?m sorry I can?t invite you all to the wedding but I will write again to say how it all went.

Just as a side note: For immigration purposes, birth certificates of foreign origins (non-Dominican) have to be of recent issue and authenticated by the local Dominican Consulate before being accepted here in the DR. I do not know if the same procedure is required for the purpose of marriage but it would seem logical.

Some countries are now set up so that their citizens can order birth certificates on-line and, if needed, have them sent directly to a local consulate (for authentication). So, you may not need to travel.

As promised on 14th September, tail note to my correspondence. E and I got married on Wednesday 10th October. The previous Wednesday we went in to see the ?Oficial? and produced all the suggested documents. The oficial said I didn?t need the declaration of Soltero as my Cedula said I was single. E had to produce her Cedula and a copy of her birth certificate. We answered questions about Mothers and Fathers names and on production of my Residency were told: That?ll be RD$300 please do you want to do it now? These two clerks here can be witnesses. A week later we brought our own witnesses and then went for a fine wedding breakfast. Wedding Las Terrenas style!
