I was recently in sosua and my friend and myself were approched by sales teams you see driving around sosua in golf carts. They wanted us to see a special promotion they were having at hotel sosua bay. I did not want to go, but my friend wanted to, and we were told we would get a free hat, and tee shirt and food and beverages to attend.
We got there and were given the start of a presentation, not even offered a beverage. Later after viewing the sales rep asked us if we wanted to leave the way we came in or another exit. I replied that we wanted to have a drink and were taken to the bar and given beverages.
My friend was actually interested in the presentation and was a good propect but i asked about the tee shirt and hat we were promised. The representative told us that we only got that if we purchased. How very very stupid and small minded of these people. My friend said, if they were going to be fraudelent on such an item as a hat and tee shirt, he did not think they would be trust worthy to believe when it came to buying one of their packages for thousands of dollars.

I have been on these promotions before and usually you get a lot more than a tee shirt and hat to listen to their pitch, but these people even cheat on that. I am just happy that they let a very good prospect as my friend get away with their small minds.

beware when you are approached , you will be misled

Cant be a reputable company...buyer beware!

The only time I ever attended such a session was by a world-renowned company (shall remain unnamed) AND I was already a timeshare holder. It was in Arizona and I received a cheque for USD$200 and a week to use in low season....now thats what I call doing business!

yes, some reputable companys offer good incentives to get you to give their presentation a chance. One company gave me, my wife, and another couple a weeks stay in their project and my brother bought a $14,000. package. and this company could not afford $5.00 to $10. for a tee shirt, a hat, a beverage and a snack...sounds like small fish trying to swim in a big pond.

No incentive=no attendance! And a hat/t-shirt would hardly be considered as such!

Then of course you get the people that show up just for the free stuff with no intention of purchasing... I'm not sure what's worse?

Boldest one I ever came across (not in DR) was in Greece where they would drive the prospective purchasers miles to get to the venue.............and then not have any transport available to take them back if they didn't purchase..............:ermm: At least Sosua Bay isn't quite stranding people in the middle of nowhere if they pulled the same stunt.

donquixote, I am in no way associated with those bastard that took you for a ride in DR nor I am in real estate or any of those scams. It seems to me that you went only for the goodies and those scammers decided to save it for a potential customer. Just suck it up and start crying. You should have told your friend to go ahead and you should have go to the beach and enjoy the beautiful DR sun.
Everyday a sucker is born. Celebrate you day and like drloca says, “buyer beware”

As a timeshare owner, I can safely say one wants to get the full "411" before sinking your money into any company. Thankfully I went in with eyes wide open and made a great investment as I went with a reputable company. Its not about the freebies but if a company offers you a t-shirt (and then doesnt even come through on that) vs a company that offers you a free week (which in a sense is a trial), I think that speaks for itself.

What's worse?
The people that show up with no intention to purchase, are the SMART ones! It is a losing proposition. Always has been, always will be. I used to attend these rip off offers with NO intention of EVER buying and spent the wasted hour or so, with the triple threat pressure sales morons, then went on the promised booze cruise and had a blast. I then thought to myself, I am on holiday and this takes a chunk of time from my vacation and that's not a good thing. Never did it again after rethinking the vacation angle.
Timeshare is for those who are bad @ math. Let them pop their champagne bottles in celebratory fashion, for the few that forgot about the fact, that airfare was never mentioned, deliberately.

That's how I see it too.
Take the money that it costs to buy a 2 week/year time sharing program and place it in a safe investment/bank, and the yearly interest is more that the cost of your hotel bill, every year that you go on vacation, and you get to keep the your money.
Seems absurd to me.

Actually, if you do "the math" on a good investment, you can come out on top. I placed mine ina rental pool many times and because it was the 2 most desirable weeks of the year, it more than paid dividends. Then after a couple of years, sold one of them for quite the profit. Guess it all comes from making informed decisions!;)

I am with Steve,
While I was in Vegas 10 years ago, I cancelled a day trip to the Grand Canyon and was disappointed with the whole scam. I was on vacation and yet shared my precious vacation time for a pitch that I regretted. It was a waste of time. Last year I was approached by a very aggressive time share salesman in Boca Chica (Coral Hamaca). Even though I told him several time in Spanish (I am from Puerto Rico) to leave me alone, he continue to invade my space and wasting my time. I ended up pushing him into the pool and hotel security took care of the rest. My vacation time is to precious to be wasted chasing a T-Shirt and a baseball cap.

frankfurt and also robert who wonders what is worse. I think you both miss the whole point. whether a promoter offers a tee shirt or other more rewarding incentives, this is a cost of doing business and averages are one out of so many people who listen to a presentation will evaluate and if a good and fair offer will purchase. the issue here is not whether one goes to the presentation for the offered incentives, the point is the promoters not being honourable to give the incentive promised, no matter how big or small. It is called honesty in advertising.

Stories like this are a rarity. Most people I have talked to, have regretted their decision to have bought. The word "scam" is quite often associated with the mention of any time share. It has has this reputation and it's been like this for years too!
If it walks like a duck, it's a duck. ;)

I believe that everyone who walks toward Playa Sosua is approached by these guys trying to get you to go in for the session and the "freebies" which you don't get if you don't purchase. We were approached the first year we were there ( much against my will) our sales rep was from the Toronto Area like us. We were just up front and said that we were hijacked in to see her and that we really were't interested in purchasing a timeshare,Well you should see how fast we were escorted off the property. LOL

In Cancun they offered me $50.00 dollars food and beverages, but you must bring your credit card with you just to show it to the sales rep .....yeah right...

Had the same experience there two years ago(I looked like a tourist); in the DR I don't get a second look since I don't appear to have money and blend right in.

Opinion or not, read the posts regarding the topic and you will see that MOST have negative vibes and realize poor value after the bottom line is determined. Can't beat the last minute all inclusive, or just buying a place.

Sorry if you're in time share sales Snowbird :cheeky:
