Aster Cable (Broadband) Test

I'm sitting here testing a 128K Aster connection and it appears to be better DNS wise than the 1.5MB Codetel DSL I have in the office.

The Aster connection is 128K down, but I have no idea what the up is?
On their site they do not say as far as I can tell.

My guess it would be a little quicker in the day time.
8pm is peak time and cable speed drops as more people get on the loop
unlike DSL.

I can pull up the Codetel home page, something I cannot do on my Codetel DSL connection.

Google, Hotmail, MSN, email etc appear to be fine, no problems.

Going by the trace route (below), they still use Codetel as their connection.

I have been with Aster for over a year in SD and their speed has been reliable. 512 down, 384 up in my case.

The line does go down on average once every 2-3 months and may take a few days to get fixed.... But that has less to do with their internet department then with the street cable lines in general.

Also, I find it is not fast enough for VOIP/Skype. I believe this is due to cable in general having higher "ping-times". Downloads and speed-tests give me the advertised speed tho.

Gave OneMax a call today.

For future reference: I ran a couple of test on Aster, ping latency averages 800-1000 ms.

Cable Broadband and Vonage

We recently installed Broadband cable ( on the North Coast). Comcast-SA using DeLancer Cable. This was a HUGE improvement over the Wireless provider we were using, but we seem to have hit a snag with Voip - specifically Vonage. Previously, VOIP was pretty much impossible, as speeds were SO bad, and so many outages.

Now, Vonage connection seems to be a problem - once the connection is made, the phone quality is great, but only about 1 in 10 calls go through or connect. Doesn't seem to be a problem with SKYPE however. We've been in touch with Vonage techs, and Comcast. No one seems to be able to figure it out. We've run TRACERT's and Speed tests - nothing seems obvious, but I'm no techie.

Anyone had similar problems, or have any ideas ?

Sorry - I didn't mean to hijack this thread. Should I start a new one ?

In my experience VOIP is going to suck whenever pings to the server are higher than 200ms, though many people will not tolerate the degradation in quality that comes with higher latency than 100ms.

In Santiago my pings to various voip service providers using Codetel are generally in the "just tolerable" range, (180-250ms) good enough to run a 35 seat call center from, though productivity would almost certainly increase if the quality was better.
