You will have to go Higuey for household goods and electronics but selection will be limited, most likely a trip to Santo Domingo is in order. If you just need simple basic Walmart type of stuff you should be ok in Higuey. The toiletry goods, I am sure you can get those in a local pharmacy or small grocery store.

I have not been to PC in a while, maybe things have changed will all the construction going on. Can someone confirm?

Definately Higuey or La Romana for household items. But prices will be higher than Santo Domingo's calle Duarte, that is for sure!!
Electronics in Santo Domingo, also.

Personal items like tooth brushes, toothpaste, soaps you can find in the local supermarkets there in Veron or Juanillo. Saw two new ones just this weekend.

A monthly trip to Santo Domingo's PriceSmart will be worthwhile for food. The supermarket in La Romana is well stocked and only slightly higher than Santo Domingo.

you get it all over here in punta cana, not worth the way to santo domingo like it was before.
you find the stores with the best rates in Veron/Punta Cana.
hygienics/food aso in the "El Ciabao" Supermarket, he's new and located near from the Gas(not the gasoline, the propane-gas) station on the other side of the street, located right on the front side of the main street, you can't miss their big "letrero" on the street front. friendly helpful staff, good variety, many different kinds of meatincluding seafood for very good rates. they also sell a variety od shampoos, deodorants aso, if you prefer special brands talk to the always present owners, they bring it in.
for household things like towels aso use the little christian shop(don't really know the name, damn) in Veron across the street of "Supermercado Camilo", they sell all that stuff "per libra". if you want to get all the stuff neede to run a kitchen aso, then i would go to Zaglul in Higuey, aside of the Basilica.
for electrodomestics of all kinds, washing machines, TV's, vens, dvd aso you can go to Bavaro Muebles, now run under new owners with very good rates for quality equipment. they are located in Veron right beside the "Plaza Genaro".
good luck

In Higuey, you can find

-cheap kitchen stuff, toiletries, some cheap kitchen appliances, and some other household stuff: Tienda el Unico (off Libertad to the left, across from market) - cheap, ran by Arabs, or Zagul (more expensive) in front of Esso gas station - mainly food

-Food in bulk - Casa de los Compadres, 2 blocks away from the market, off Libertad to teh right first street before the market, for shopping bulk rice, cooking oil, some vegetables (potatoes, garlic, onions, etc.), and all non-perishables. You can save up to 30% compared to supermarket prices

-alcohol: Suplilicores, first street before the market off Libertad (same street that goes to Casa de los Compadres, and Corripio). Good prices - e.g. Chivas Regal 12 yr whiskey at 800 pesos (supermarket prices about 1100 and up) - you do not need to buy bulk most of the stuff

- electronics: Corripio, Iberia. Corripio is on the same street as Casa de los Compadres, first street off Ave Libertad (to the right) before the market

- clothes, and general stuff (food, household items, etc): Supermercado Higueyano (cheaper) or Iberia (more expensive, but bigger and wider selection).

- furniture: there are many MANY stores on Ave Libertad

- house decorations: Supermercado Higueyano (cheaper) and Iberia

For food, this is the ranking, from least expensive to the most expensive:
1) Casa de Los Compadres (mostly bulk buying, non-perishables)
2) Supermercado Higueyano
3) Zagul
4) Iberia

I hope this helps you.

Doggone, that rubio sure comes in handy. i sort of suspected he might come in on this thread, since them's his stompin' grounds...

Once more to the rescue, and with good information.,.....

So the bottom line is: that what you spend on transportation to Santo Domingo is no longer recovered through better pricing? Very good thing to know. Thanks.

that botom line is exactly right .
ifyou life in higuey or in the PC area the full day travel to StaDgo isn't any longer worth the ride to the capital city.
if you have to go to st dgo anyways for other pruposes, o.k., pass by a big market like supermercado nacional aso and fill up the trunk to fill your fridge.
the last months we even get more smaller supermarlets even here in PC with very reasonable pricing, for many things lately i do not even travel to higuey lately, which i di once a week all the time before. of course for many things the travel to higuey is still worth it or even neccessary, but there's at the end some improvement on the stuff.

We travelled at the beginning to Higuey once a month - but the drive can be a nightmare if theres loads of traffic, but if you go a further half an hour, to La Romana, then "Jumbo" is more american style with everything, and a top floor with electronics, and their fresh meat and cheese counter is to die for. Apart from that, Bavaro has 4 fair supermarkets now, and Americanas hardware is getting a lot better for price and variety on household things and electrics. By the way Pricesmart in Santo Domingo closed a few years ago now.......although there is talk that Kmart are opening. But on the drive back to Punta Cana airport, they are currently building a shopping centre that will have "Jumbo", and also a furniture store called "Ilumel" - which is fantastic for all styles of furniture, and great prices. So hopefully this will be opened around Easter. Good towels and linens, homewares, and clothing, is easily picked up with a quick flight to the USA, or you can get the ferry from Santo Domingo to Puerto Rico for the weekend, and go shopping mad at a fraction of the price, as they have all the US stores there like Walmart, JC Penneys etc etc etc.......

lizandsilvy...
The meats and cheese avaliable in the supermarkets currently open in Bavaro, are none of them "American style"?
As far as the American type food you can get from Jumbo.etc...is there not much of that avaliable actually in PC?
I'd never thought of taking the ferry to Puerto Rico for shopping?? Is it expensive? Do they have a limit on how much you can bring back??
