Cooki Silvario (spelling?) head of the Playa Dorada Hotel owners assocation, came up with the bone headed idea of charging each vehicle RD50 to enter Playa Dorada. This charge is to fix the roads and common areas inside Playa Dorada.

In a heated meeting with tour operators, excursion providers, and taxi unions, these entities complained that these charges would be very difficult to implement for companies which would have to pay twice to pick up and drop off hotel guests. for some companies this will cost thousands of dollars month.

It also sets a bad precedent, will Cofresi, RIU Maimon, Costambar, follow suit?

Apparently there many problems yesterday when they started charging private vehicles.

It does not surprise me, this is the same guy who was in charge of 'fixing' the roads in Puerto Plata and had to be removed from the job, after 15 months of idiotic construction where 10 miles of road were repeatedly dug up, left alone for weeks soemtimes months at a time (after everyone dipped into the funds), filled, dug up again (often leaving no way for people to get from one side of the town to the other - for days!). Sometimes they worked just during rush hour.

The restaurants and bars inside the PD complex must love his new idea but my guess is it wont' last more than two weeks. They might be able to extort some money from business via monthly fees though. thugs, nothing but modern highway robbery - LITERALLY.

Frankly, I'd be surprised if nobody had previously proposed a surcharge (per guest/per sale or whatever) that the properties and businesses could pass on to the tourists. They'd certainly raise more money, and perhaps build up a sizeable reserve over time to address future infrastructure repairs/improvements.

They're going to need it if they intend to remain competitive with the other developments around the island.

This is not a way to be competitive! Its a way to **** off your guests, partners, and clients. Personally, I will not visit any establishment inside PD until they get rid of this failed abortion of an idea.

Owner's assocations collect fees from their owners, to maintain their grounds, not from your own guests.

If you go to your own guests for this, build it inside the room rate or charge a surcharge on the bill. This, however, is bone-headed idea. Now every business needs to create a petty cash for their drivers, collect receipts, taxes, accounting, ughhghghgh

What if every hotel starts charging an entrance fee???

heck I'm gonna start charging people to come over to my house.

I agree, they should have put it in a back door surcharge passed on to the tourists via room, food, and beverage taxes.

The owner's association fee is likely just a pass through gotten from charging guests. I'd just bump it up a few pesos. My question is, why didn't the HOA simply agree to raise the fee? Seems as though that would be a reasonable solution.

Is it because the A/I's represent a captive market, and the surcharge serves as a disincentive for their guests to leave the area?

That said, 50RD doesn't seem like a lot, especially when it's charged to a minibus carrying 20 people or a taxi full of folks on their way to the club.

It's absurd, idiotic, and counter productive.
Those roads are used to service the hotels in the project.
They should pay for maintenance, and if it's hurting them too much financially, raise some prices to compensate.
The taxi drivers, busses etc, should refuse to pay it, and if they are not allowed to enter, drop the guests off at the gate and see how long that stupid 50 pesos entrance fee lasts.

PS: You might say that it's a kooky idea, or is it spelled, "cooki"?

This is typical here. Another brain donor makes another brainless decision.

As we know, things are very black and white here, with very little room for common sense. One person on a power trip can screw it up for many others. Their inherent "machismo" will not allow them to back down or loose face. I'm looking forward to seeing who he blames when he eventually lifts the toll.

It makes me laugh that they put the burden on the people that actually shuttle the hotel guests in and out. The people that are all part of the "hopefully" positive experience guests take away from the DR.

I agree with Marco, they should drop the guests at the gate, that should last about 2 days, maybe less if it starts to rain.

I wish I could be there when all of the hotel owners start calling the bozo who made the decision and explaining the real "options" this guy has. He will probably have to quickly make a call to his real estate guy in Punta Cana to hold off on getting that ocean front villa adjacent to Teeth of the Dog, and for that matter, the new Land Rover deluxe and the RD10M upgrade to his house in PP, and those new gifts for his three novias....

I actually seriously thought about the idea of dropping the guests at the gate and let them walk, just to teach Kook-job a lesson. I just don't want the tourists to go home with a bad taste in their mouth. But we could give them Kook-job's private phone number to complain.

Very few people would be inconvenienced, as it wouldn't last long.
All the drivers have to say is that there is an official strike line drawn at the gates, and anyone who pays and crosses could get into big trouble.
The tourists will understand, and I agree that giving them Cuqui's phone number is a great idea.
I give it one day, 2 tops.

Let us know when this is implemented. I thought perhaps it was in place now, but today Oct 17 at 12:30 I drove through both gates. I gave and got my usual wave, nothing else.

They wanted to implement it on Monday, but Tourism Ministry intervened on bahalf of tour operators to get another meeting with Cuq-job. Yesterday, I was told that they tried to implement it with private vehicles and that they had a big problem at the gates, however, this is unconfirmed and could be a rumor mixed up with the Monday situation.

You can do better than that - Kuky is one of our neighbours, you could take your tourists to visit him at home, busload after busload of them...........................:) Or everyone could email him presidencia@kukysilverio.com ...........

His house doesn't need an upgrade, Chip, it's brand spanking new, they only moved in a few months back.

In brief, Association of Tour Operators (Opetur) got no advance warning about this, just a letter in typical dictatorial fashion. They tried to meet to come to mutually acceptable solution but got no response, so they replied formally by letter. Letters are here:
Puerto Plata Digital

The charge was first of all suspended & then cancelled for tour busses
Puerto Plata Digital
pending another meeting next Monday
Puerto Plata Digital
However, I don't think it has been suspended for vans delivering food etc & there was some talk of bringing Politur in to 'manage' the gate. Which means for me I won't be using second gate in case a van driver decides to have a 'discussion' with Politur & latter get itchy trigger fingers......... My understanding is none of these charges apply to first gate.

Very poorly thought through. The buses that take people OFF the property are saving the resorts plenty of money. If the guests are not on the resort, they are not consuming food/beer/services. The resorts should be PAYING the companies that take their guests off their property.

The person who thought of this cash grab should be immediately fired for incompitence. They obviously do not have a grip on reality.

I'll be in Playa Dorada next week, and will almost certainly be visiting Ocean World again (for the 4th time)

If you want to co-ordinate things, make it MY bus that drops the guests off at the gate. I could likely intice a tourist riot... haha. On a full bus, I bet I could get at least half of them to write angry e-mails - especially if they were scripted... (which I would be happy to prepare in advance - people in general are sheep)

I'm dead serious. Like the issue with Mel in Sosua, when I become dedicated to a cause, I don't back down.... no matter the potential issues it may cause.

Who goes there besides AI hotel guests anyways?
There's nowhere to park as a private citizen, not to mention the beach is crap IMO with no wind, no waves and no parking.

Lots of Dominican go there to the movie theatre, Pizza Hut, Casino. Many have cars and I'm sure that they are really ticked. Not to mention all the sankies who have cars bought by their girlfriends. They will hate to pay.

I have little reason to go in either, but there is constant traffic going in and out.
