Greetings to all - I hope everyone is staying safe and dry.
Does anyone know of specific/organized relief efforts for this tropical storm in the Santo Domingo area?
My husband and I would love to be of help - but are unsure as to how best to be involved...
Any info on ways in which we can help are welcomed!
Many thanks.

I am not going to give one penny to anyone. The government had an eleven billion peso surplus. It is about time that they gave some of it back. Harsh, I know.

If one of my people is needy, I will take that up on a case by case basis. I am currently trying to get in touch with people in San Juan de la Maguana. We?ll see what happens.

Besides this government is famous for only giving assistance to it party members. Their motto is "Serve the party to serve the country"....well let them serve cake! Sorry.

And it's early yet to know what, if anything, will be done.
Give it a day or two after the storm is over, and we should know more.

Dolores posted in another thread about collections of items at Clinica Cruz Jiminian, and Padre Rogelio Cruz. There is also the Red Cross, which will no doubt be busy distributing emergency supplies.

Do you think that there is something the OP can do to help?

They can donate supplies, and/or offer their services as volunteers, especially if they speak Spanish and have specialist skills. There is also Defensa Civil.

I'm sure they will, locally, in areas worst hit. However, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies says on its 30th. Oct. Bulletin 'This Bulletin is being issued for information only, and reflects the situation and the information available at this time. The Federation is not seeking funding or other assistance from donors for this operation at this time.'

So for people outside DR maybe worth checking just in case they were thinking of donating to IFRC?

I'm taking some items down to Mujer y Salud today. I've also translated their international appeal into English. They are asking for international help, if anyone outside the DR would like to donate please send me a PM and I'll forward the bank details.

I live on the malecon......near pasteur. Where is Mujer y Salud exactly? I think I have passed it in the car. Is that really in the New City or is it Gazcue? I want to drop some things off and volunteer, but I get lost a lot in the city! It helps if I have some landmarks, not streets.

Thanks!

They're on Calle Cambronal in Ciudad Nueva, one or two blocks up from the Malecon but I think it's a one-way street and you have to approach it the other way, driving south from Padre Billini. It's on the right side of the street if you're facing the Malecon, on the corner with Jos? Gabriel Garc?a - the sign got blown away by the storm so it's not that obvious. The only landmark I can think of it the cemetery - Cambronal is the street that goes down to the Malecon from the cemetery.

Mercado Ecologico - helping community farmers affected by storm

hi all - Thanks to everyone for the helpful info!
For those of you who are familiar with the Mercado Ecologico, they sent out a message on Wednesday announcing that they would be suspending their service (for at least this week) due to the devastation of farms by the storm.
I spoke with Clara at Mercado Ecologico and they are helping to get water and other much needed items (clothes, food) to 150 families in communities that have been affected near Bani and Salinas.
They have a great need for potable water and are taking daily trips to the communities to distribute goods (by their reports the govt just arrived today (saturday) to start aid).
If you want to bring water or other goods, you can bring it straight to Mercado Ecologico (perhaps call them in advance at 809-482-0561 or 809-482-7463) and they will take it to the region for distribution.

Thanks mbh - as Mercado Ecologico customers we'll be following that one up too. They are in Mirador Sur, on Calle Leonor Feltz which is one block south of La Cadena Supermarket.

That's great, Chiri - I know they could use as much help as people can offer. We took over some botellones of agua this morning and Clara at ME told me that they also are in need of goods for babies (there are over 170 children under age of 1 in the communities they're assisting). I imagine that translates into formula (along with potable water), clothing, blankets, diapers, etc.

- San Cristobal, leaving Weds 8:00am, meet at the office at 7:30, return that same day.

For more details contact:
Clarissa Valdez or July Betances. Tel?fono: 809 682 3128.
Calle Jos? Gabriel Garc?a 501 esquina Cambronal, Ciudad Nueva. Santo Domingo.

I have the full text of their e-mail in Spanish, please PM me if you would like me to forward it.

We didn't manage to make contact with the Mercado Ecol?gico, but together with juanita we made a trip to San Cristobal and delivered supplies to the coffee growers association (Fedecares) many of whose members have been affected in and around the community of Los Cacaos, Cambita.

After speaking to them earlier in the day and establishing what their most urgent needs were we took a couple of boxes of basic food and hygiene products and five botellones of drinking water. Access to Los Cacaos is not possible, so we loaded the supplies on to a pickup outside their office in San Cristobal for them to take them as far as the road will go, from where local volunteers would then take them to the victims on foot.

Pedro is hoping to visit tomorrow and take some photos.

Pravda Helps!

If you want to help you can come tomorrow to Pravda Sushi Bar in Santo Domingo. Pravda is collecting funds to buy medicine that will be taken by Caribair's jets and helicopters to the most affected areas.
