I am thinking of buying a good ($700) digital camera and accessories online and having it sent here via my Miami mail service. I have imported books and scuba equipment in the past and the import taxes were zero or very low.

I was wondering if anyone has imported a camera this way? What was the tax? I hear electronics get taxed at a high rate?

Supposedly any items over US$100.00 is subject to import tax. I regularly import electronic goods via my Miami EPS address. Sometimes I am taxed sometimes not. The Aduana are a law unto themselves, I have never experienced any continuity. Maybe you?ll be lucky and maybe not. Its all down to who opens your package and how he/she interoperates the value of the item. Either way its normally much cheaper than buying the same item here in the DR. Good look.

It's US$200 exempted, for any commercial item. Books, CDs, DVDs etc can be imported even at higher amounts tax free if it is clear they are for personal use.

Electronics over 200 dollars will be imposed a tax, but that tax will be much lower than a book value tax in aduana tables. EPS deal, call it.

Thanks for the update Rubio. I asked EPS about a week ago they told me $100.00 us, buts that?s normal here.

In the last 2 weeks, I?ve imported $800 scuba gear with no tax and $175.00 iPods with tax. How do you advise someone on this s**t ?????? From my experience they?ll charge what ever they want.:cross-eye

US$200 is the limit and I have never been taxed in two years bringing stuff in via EPS.

200 USD is a rule of thumb... but they don't go by invoices but by what they know as commerciable goods... like cell phones and iPods. I just came back from a trip from FL. I had a 2000 USD steel guitar in my luggage... they looked at it... asked themselves what the heck it could be... one who supposedly was a guitar player was consulted... they shook their head and almost seemed to feel sorry for me after finding the strings at a 1/2" distance off the fret board was deemed an unplayable guitar by the "specialist"... verict: dejalo pasar! Actually, it was the second time I came in with that instrument, so I would have battled off any intent of taxing me on this one... but it kept'em busy and made them overlook all the other stuff I was bringing in.
On the other hand, I got some protein powder delivered thru a Miami forwarder and was hit with a 50USD tax for about 190USD of that stuff... they know it, they get'ya.
I regularly ship in medications for way over 200USD... never paid one cent.
However, I would never send desirable and expensive electronics like a digital camera via a mail forwarder. I am sure many did that successfully but in my opinion one should not test temptation... it might just get "lost" or taxed heavily. Either wait for a trip to Miami or for somebody who comes from there and can take it with them in their HAND LUGGAGE on the plane.
