Please excuse me if the answer seems obvious...

But how do you pay your Visa bill while you are living in the DR?

When I last lived there I was unable to deposit funds into my Canadian bank account from money I made in the DR.

If it makes any difference..I bank with TD Canada Trust.

I have 2 Visa cards that I will be planning on using while I am living in the DR, and will want to continue making my monthly payments onto them.

I will be keeping my Canadian account, but will also have a Dominican Bank account opened for my direct payment deposits coming from my employer.

I was unsuccessful previously on discovering a way to transfer my money from my Dominican Bank account to my Canadian one.

Thanks in advance for help and suggestions :)

I pay my credit cards by direct debit from my UK bank account which is funded by my pension payments to the same account. To transfer money from here there is always Western Union but its horribly expensive. Have a look at Foreign Exchange Specialists | HiFX plc, they?re british but seem to be able to transfer different monies all over the place. You can email them from the page.

I pay my UK credit card via online banking straight from my UK bank account. It has UK pensions going into it so doesn't need topping up from DR bank account. However, you can transfer money from Dominican banks to banks abroad - my bank here in DR offered to do this during the nerve-wracking 2004 period, just to get it out of DR. I didn't take them up on that & went for a Caymans account instead, but if they were prepared to do a bank transfer to UK I don't see why they wouldn't do one to Canada.

The best way:

Transferring funds from the DR to Canada: All your DR Bank needs is your Canadian Account details, i.e. Account No., Swift etc. and its done 5 to 10 days. Pay your CC on line.

Getting funds from the DR to Canada "While in Canada" is even easier: Get cash advances on your DR. CC. and pay it online from Canada. I don’t think there’s a limit.

I done both successfully in the past few months.

Ok thanks everyone.

I do most of my banking online anyways.

So as long as my Dominican bank can successfully transfer funds to my Canadian account, I will be ok.

I was under the impression that they couldn't do that....

I def. don't want to have to send my money to a friend or family in Canada through Western Union to have them deposit for me....wayyyyy to expensive...and too much hassle.

Bank transfer from US to Dr is about $20/$25 fees.Whatever the amount.

I would be curious to know how much they charge you from DR to US (or Canada)?
I think there is a special tax.

The best way would be to ask a cashier's check to your Dominican bank and mail it.

Same thing for airplane tickets there is a $100 tax when your travel starts in DR.

Have you tried the cashier's check? Maybe OK in the US but don't even think of it in Canada. You're looking around 30 days or more, if your bank even accepts it.

You can't say those checks can't be cashed.

A cashier's cheque or draft is issue by the Dominican bank draw on a US bank account.

True example (I did it several time). Banco progreso issue a check (american Express bank)
American Express Tower, 200 Vesey Street,
New York, New York 10048, U.S.A.
(212) 640-4041 / Fax: (212) 640-4222

If you ask for Euros they give you a check from
American Express Bank GmbH
Frankfurt Germany.

We are talking about American Express Bank not traveller's check.
Banco progreso never charged me to issue a such check.
I Know Popular charges $10.

Don pedro is correct

I have seen many International banks from various countries issue US dollar cashiers checks. All of them were drawn on one or another US bank, as any other US check, with a US account number and US ABA/routing number.

I'm not saying it can't be done, just that it takes time. I've found that a tranfer is a lot faster. Heck, even a draught from one bank deposited in the bank next door takes time in the DR.

Wait...so will I have to get the money issued in Canadian dollars first?

I was just hoping there may be a bank where I could bring my pesos..and have it transfered to my Canadian bank, and then I would be able to pay my visa bills online...

I just had a great idea...(welll I think it may be a great idea)..not 100% sure how it would work...

If I opened a Scotia Bank account in Canada, either joint with my parents, or so that they have my pin#/password (for online banking)...wouldn't I be able to deposit my pesos into Scotia Bank in the DR, and my parents be able to withdraw this money from the account in Canada, and use it to pay my Visa bills???

Any ideas on if that would work?

you'll need two Scotiabank accounts.....

one here and one in Canada to make transfers!

This way WILL work as transfers can be made between the two.:glasses:
