We took our worker, Isadro, to Dr Domingo Taveras at Hospital Bournigal in Puerto Plata and he helped lots and prescribed good medication. Telephone number is 809 320 8343 and email is drtaveras@codetel.net.do

But the OP asked about a "spacialist" , isn't that only available at NASA????

Sorry, couldn't resist...

Great cardiac care at Clinica Corominas. Dr. Jos? Perell? among others.
Also at Centro Medico Cibao...

It is just that they have more patients, ergo, more experience...more and most modern equipment, ergo better information = better diagnosis...

Bournigal is okay for POP or perhaps in an emergency, and patient trust is often as good as a good doctor....but for important stuff it is either here in Santiago, CEDIMAT in Santo Domingo or MIAMI!!

I do not know about Dr Taveras, but what I do know is that Clinica Bournigal usually is a big scam, especially in an emergency. Beware!

That is a strong statement and certain to cause a lot of unease in the minds of those of us who live in Sosua/Cabarete/Puerto Plata who would be relying on treatment at Bournigal in an emergency.

I think you need to explain.

By scam are you speaking about the charges, the quality of emergency care, or both?

If not Bournigal in an emergency, where. Santiago has better medical services but too far to go for immediate care in case of an emergency.

I had friends that both had bad quality ofcare and got overcharged. Maybe they were unlucky - but I would never go to Bournigal. If you have a dominican insurance u r less likely to be overcharged.

Like I said maybe they were unlucky - any good experiences for emergency care at Bournigal?

Yep... yesterday! I had a coton stick's coton ball that had gotten stuck in my ear yesterday morning. I went right up there. First to my lung doc (Dr. Johnny Tavares) but he wasen't there. So the secretary gave me his phone number and he recommended I'd go to the ER. I went I have ARS insurance (RD$ 500/month), just showed the card and was taken care of immediately (the place wasn't busy, I must say). A doctor came right around... lit up that ear and pulled the stuck thing out in a minute. They offered a Diclofenac (aka. Voltaren) injection, but as I had come within minutes of the stupid incident I declined. And I out I went paying 21 Pesos copay.

I have said it before, having local insurance may not protect one for mayor issues, but it puts one apart from the tourist crowd and tourist pricing and so does speaking Spanish.

Yeah, Bournigal (the doctors office and hospital section) can be quite a zoo sometimes, for as crowdy as it can get and I would hate to see my self checked in there for a serious and complicated life threatening issue... but then, I have never been treated badly on minor issues, like my pneumonia, I am just about to recover from (I hope).

On the other side, I must report that I was very pleasantly surprised to see the fine job they did on a kid that suffered a road accident that I went to pick up at the public hospital in down town Santiago (to bring him back to his family here in POP). While the rooms were not all to inviting, they stitched this lad up so good, my Palm Beach plastic surgeon couldn't have done it better and for thousands less that he would have done it... namely for FREE.

And...
Look, I think it boils down to what so many who live here (successfully) for years have preached over and over again... It's just like everywhere: You want to make acquaintances, become friendly with people, and that includes doctors too (not just your friendly neighborhood cuerito ;)). At "home" as some still seem to consider the place they come FROM, you don't feel that helpless, partly because you know people and you are also known by people. Coming to an other country, one has to build a new network and quickly, diligently and also strategically.
Also leave an emergency list of contacts with several folks you know and trust, if possible a doctor too, so you know, that if something happens and you are not in control for any given time, people HERE will be alarmed and look after and stand up for you! Have a copy of contacts list in your vehicle and if possible on you if ever possible too.

About the children hospital in Santiago. My kid was hit by a smaller truck when he was 2. In very bad condition, 50-50 to survive (he survived...). The intensive care was excellent, doctors without borders there. U only pay for blood and x-rays.

After the intensive care...The guys that took care of all broken bones was probably had a butcher degree. u pay for plaster.

My kid was born here in a clinic (not Bournigal) and weird things happened. The babys family knew the doctor that was going to the caesarian so we went there and the childbirth went fine but then... needs one more night observation bl.a bl.a. I was VERY fortunate to have dominican educated friends that had told me that if I think something seems weird it probably is. "Take him to Union de Medica in Santiago, they are serious there". Went there and the diagnose went from "he has to be in for observation a couple of days" to "your baby is all fine, congrats". I go where the educated Educated dominicans goes, I do what they do. Worked fine for me so far.

Most clinics here are businesses in the worst sense. They have no incentive to cure you and send you home fast - so they keep you there and then charge you...

So what to do?? Just now I am selling my car and motorcycle, I had them for 6 years and been all over the country. I think the driving and roads gets worse and worse, so I rather take the carribe tours and then walk with an airbag on the sidewalk. I spend most of my on the beach nowadays.
