I would like to see if i could get some advice on a trip to the DR. My wife and I have been to the Iberostar Quetzal in Mexico for 4 years in a row now. Due to some very bad beach errosion going on there, I'm not sure that we will go back this year. Take a look at it, the pictures look terrible and this just happened in less than a month.

So we are thinking about taking our first trip to the Dominican Republic. We would like to stay at one of the Iberostar resorts and since we've never been to the DR, we don't know wether to stay in Punta Cana or Bayahibe. Can someone tell us the differences in the two places. We like a laid back atmosphere and just to stay on the beach everyday. Any advice or information would be appreciated. Oh, by the way, my wife likes to go topless on the beach, is this allowed at both places also, on the beach and at the pool? Thanks in advance.

I would suggest then Iberstar Hacienda in Bayahibe, which is much more laid back than the Iberostars in Punta Cana. The Bayahibe/Dominicus beach is very long, and I would think there would be stretches where topless would not be a problem.

Wow to your pictures. We were at the Viva Maya in Nov 2007 and watched the beaches disappear in the week we were there. My fiance was near tears when he took me down past the Sandos property to an island that is now practically completely covered with sand. He had snorkeled around it!

Sorry can't say much about your resorts. We stayed at the Viva Dominicus in Bayahibe. Beautiful water, snorkeling was amazing, lots of beach - lots of people, topless not an issue at all (actually topless wasn't an issue anywhere we went). We had one night at Punta Cana Grand Bahai Principe - long, long beach but the crowds reminded me of a shopping mall at Christmas. My favorite by far was Samana. Secluded, beautiful, relaxing, no crowds. We stayed at the Gran Pardise.

Hope this helps?

We are thinking of trying the Levantado next time. You didn't find it bothersome to be on the island? We like being active and doing excursions. My other question, we did go for an afternoon and the beach on the public, although beautiful, seemed to drop off very quickly and the waves were very large. It was a bit of a windy day too though. In any case, how is the beach for the resort? Shallow, protected, can one walk any distance? Is there any walking paths through the island on the resort property?

The beach on the resort side slopes down but no big drop off. Again on the resort side the beach is not very long and I would not consider it a walk at all. You can walk the road on the island and it takes a bout 15 minutes to walk it. There is not a lot of activity on the island. I'm not sure about excursions but it is a great place to lay back and do nothing.

bayahibe or punta cana

If it was myself booking it would be a no brainer punta cana all the way.
the beach is much nicer and there is many topless women on the beach.
You would love the resort. Many of my friend and family been there and many of the go back every year. We like it so much that i recommend it to my customers here in canada. Never lost a customer.

enjoy your vacation

If you enjoy sunsets, Bayahibe is the clear winner..Maybe the best sunset on the island. I love Bayahibe especially around that time of day!;)
