A friend of mine in POP wants a cell phone for her birthday.

Can anyone tell me what a good cell phone costs in the DR?

Thanks

HI

I just bought my husband his thrid cell phone, the ones before I did nto spend a lot fo money on maybe 50 - 75 dollars and it showed they were crap. I jsut purchased one with a camera and music and we get great reception for 175 dollars and 25 dollars to have it programmed .

Locally assembled "new" Motorola V3's are now around 3000 Pesos (something shy of USD 100.oo). They have a mediocre camera, some mp3 playing ability and silly games and locally considerd "catche", "chevere" or "alante-alante"... meaning cool or hot, which ever you prefer.
The cheapest reasonable deal is a new version of the old basic Nokia at Orange, which sells for 795 Pesos INCLUDING a new number AND 200Pesos calling credit. Has a b&w screen, no camera, no toys but better signal reception than the expensive Motorola. They are not considered cool nor hot at all by the locals and some may be offended by been given "una cosa de esta, tan fea y sin na'a".

The above mentioned basic orange which we have been using for about a month is 590 pesos with the free 200. It's fine for short time period.
