Is this legal, they steal the name and the recipe but don't even mention DR in the article, they shamelessly omit that Mamajuana is an old (maybe centuries old?) Dominican home-made drink/remedy/viagra, no, they go and call it a "Caribbean legend"; I feel like the country is victim of plagiarism or whatever is called, at least if you're going to use the name (which I'm sure it hasn't been registered anywhere), they should at least give the DR the credit.

Wow, the wrestler must?ve come down for a vacation, paid a salida or two and had a brainstorm!! It will be interesting to see exactly what the ingredients are for their version of mamajuana. I always thought at least some of its potency came from the rum base. And the word, mamajuana? Well, 'mama' is a verb applied infront of certain body parts to describe oral sex. Juana is a very common Dominican female name. Are they really going to keep the name? Interesting! Shouldn?t JUana get royalties?

I'll be surprised if Brugal, Barcelo, or some other Dominican company hasn't already registered / "trademarked" the Mamajuana name. It will be interesting to see if he gets his a$$ sued by one of these companies.

Hmm, as far as I understood the article, the ex-wrestler's potion does not contain alcohol...
Thus naming it 'mamajuana' is not only deceiving but a joke... :tired:

I think you're absolutely right! One my friends is an aboriginal lawyer who did her Masters on intellectual property and protecting the traditional knowledge of aboriginal peoples. As you know many medical remedies have their roots in traditional medicine and none of these peoples have been compensated. I don't know what clout there is but it seems to me this is either a violation of some intellectual property law or false advertising.

Here's World Intellectual Property Organisation's (WIPO) link to the Dominican Republic contact information.

The didn't use the word "viagra" because that's patented and they would be sued. Is Mamajuana strictly Dominican?

Intellectual property protection is nearly impossible if not outright impossible in the Dominican Republic for mamajuana. The tainos who are credited with the recipe were wiped out. At the present any ancestry has been diluted quiet a bit. If we had a direct lineage like the aboriginal peoples of Australia then there is some basis.

As far as I know there is no patent for mamajuana. Anybody can make it at home like its done in the Dominican Republic all the time. At this point in time its not like Coca Cola or cerveza Presidente etc.

Not to hijack my own thread, but this article mentions the case of the Neem tree in India (in DR they pronounce it "nin". This tree is all over the DR, but not because of it's anti-fungal agent, but because its considered an effective mosquito repellent. Funny I have never heard before that this tree also had other medicinal values or healing powers.

Back to Mamajuana, the case of the Neem tree in India is an indication that a can fight this type of biopiracy. Don't expect our government to do anything though...

Thanks Margaret for this interesting information.

But Dominicans say the potency comes from guevo de carey, whch is one of the ingredients of a good mamajuana.

Years ago Pib mentioned that "turtle penis" was one of the search terms that got visitors to the Dominican Cooking site. Try it...

to funny. $42.95/12 pack and you do not have to go to the DR to get it!! Personally I think going to the DR is the only way to buy it. Not to mention that this product is also alcohol free! :ermm: And the point of that would be............??
