I thought i would write this after reading some of the nonsense printed on this web site.A brief history i have been in this country for 7 years on and off i work offshore so 2 months away 1 here in santo domingo.I have lived all over santo domingo and the island also in the last 7 years.I have a wife and two lovely daughters here and are currently living in a so called good area of santo domingo ha ha no such thing .In the last 7 years we have been ripped off for money more times than i care to remember.The thing that makes me laugh is this belief that people here are sociable good people god give me a break man.In my experience from the top of goverment to the local police man on the street corruption is rife.I work in a very corrupt nation in africa and they have nothing on the nastys that live here.In this country i have learnt to my expense money ie peso is all people care about here .Even familys do not trust each other when it comes to money .There is no hope of any help offth police when crimes are commited against you.Example my wife had a gun put to her head at a bank cash machine in full view of a so called dominican policeman what happend she handed the money over which was no doubt shared with the policeman.My passport was stolen in another incident i had topay corrupt police to even report it in one day no dinero would of took 5 or 6 days .Ive been ripped off by police taxis restaurants lawyers even so called church reps basicaly dominicans will rip you off if they think you have money.It is not important were you are my house has been broken in to twice last year luckily we wernt there its well known here for the robbers to shoot first then loot.My wife was held up in a public taxi 1 month ago .She got in the taxi because there was 2 pregnant women in the back little did she know they were the partners of the driver and passenger.They proceeded to take her id passport all her moneyand even her shoes bear in mind my wife is dominican not european so if you are thinking of coming here to live or even holiday what ever you do do nottrust the locals no matter how nice they seem always remember money is the first and last thing on any of these peoples minds .Thank god all our documents are sorted out and were off to england.

I understand why you are upset for sure. However, my experiance in Santiago has been much different thankfully. Yes, Domincans will take advantage of you monetarily if they think you can but once you know how to research prices, etc it really isn't a real problem. Also, being able to speak the language fluently enough is important to not be seen as an outsider and one really needs to have a cu?a in the police deprtment or military, no doubt about it. Nonetheless good luck in England.

Maybe it will be for them.
The DR is not for everyone.
Some people just run into one obstacle after another, and others find paradise here.

Maybe it will, maybe it wont.

One thing is sure, if his experience in England goes "less than expected", he probably won't be ranting about it in some online forum.

To Vinnie, do you still trust your DOMINICAN wife?

Please, explain your answer, since according to you, NO Dominican is trustworthy.

Still trying to get my head round a Brit. calling himself Vinnie (reminds me of a long-running UK sitcom. called Eastenders...........) ;)

Quite seriously, though, anyone but anyone can have one or two bad incidents here, no matter how careful you are. To have a litany of them (like that other poster Papa Benito) tells me the individual either wears a sign on his forehead or is unwilling to accept his own responsibility in the matter. Sorry to sound unimpressed and unsympathetic but there it is.

And if I hear from the 'lads' vinnie that you're badmouthing all Dominicans back in the UK, watch out. :)

Or he's probably like those people that seem to be mosquito magnets, always getting eaten by those annoying creatures. Of course, what he attracts is much worst than mosquitoes.

He should've bought a can of Dominican repellent. :cheeky: ;)

UK is 'third most expensive country'
The country's reputation as "rip-off Britain" seems assured, after research by banking giant HSBC showed only Norway and France had higher living costs.

The survey, which uses data from the Economist Intelligence Unit, ranks countries according to the relative cost of sustaining a typical British lifestyle and illustrates how long a Briton's typical annual expenditure would last overseas.

HSBC said that if, for example, a couple ate out twice a month in the UK the study assumed they would continue to do so if they moved abroad.

With the lifestyle remaining the same, the study showed how much longer or shorter their budget would last.

The results show a year's annual expenditure in the UK would sustain the same lifestyle for almost two years in South Africa, and four years in Iran.

In Norway it would last 11 months and one week, while in France it would have gone after 11 months and two weeks.

Britons moving to the most popular overseas destinations of Australia and Spain would also be able to maintain their current lifestyle on a lower budget, the survey showed.

One year's annual expenditure in the UK would last 14 months and one week in Australia and 15 months and three weeks in Spain.

Enrique Roche, head of HSBC Premier, said: "Britons who live abroad, especially those who do so for only a few months each year, are often not willing to compromise on their standard of living.

"This research gives great insight into those countries that will allow your cash to stretch the furthest, and in turn those countries that may shrink it."

According to figures from the Foreign Office, 500,000 Britons live abroad for part of the year, while 5.5 million British nationals are based overseas permanently

LA Republica Africana Dominicana-
much more like Africa than any other place in the world
Same strategies / life styles: little organized planning/tribal mentality. Reactionary.
Socialist Representative "Democracy"

lots of both advantages, disadvantages. Lessons to learn.
- Invest wisely-funds you can afford to lose;
- Have an exit plan before you get into anything here;
- Don't look to a court system that works- stay away from legal issues;
- Do not expect repayment or respect of agreements - difficult enforcement
- Verify everything independently - everything

Bad experiences encountered are unfortunate, but not unlikely.

dominican novela wannabes

well whoopy doo thanks for all the replies.To all the dominican replies you obviously can speak english which means you have money which means you walk round with your head up your rear end thinking you live in a novela.Honestley do you think we dont laugh at you people walking round carrefour like some sort of cheesy actor in a cheap mexican series ha ha shame you dont really have money but live on credit nice suv if the bank didnt own it.As for the european or american replies remember i said i have been here 7 years my wife is dominican so espanol is not a problem.We are simply tierd of parasites trying to rip you off at every corner.Yes britian is expensive but hey whats life without basic services .1 police who you can trust 2 water you can drink and flows 24 hrs electricity no inversor or planta decent food and the most important people who you can trust .After visiting britian my wife swore to move there and only to rtn to rep dom for holidays after all britian is not a third world country and yes dominicans have been slagged off but get this not from me as much as my wife.Simply because she has seen what the real world is and appreciates the finer things in life now.Remember dominicans if you have never lived any different you wont know any different so you just carry on ripping eachother off and being general parasites on the world stage.Always remember we in the civilized world dont coun pouring a couple of buckets of cold water on your self as a shower.No cloro and a clean floor dsnt mean that your house is clean rule britania
