For myself, an American, the best thing about living in the D.R. is being amongst people that don?t take themselves so very seriously.

The worst....they don?t take me seriously either.:cheeky:

& did you receive my PM answer to yours a few weeks ago - subject was Cedula as I recall. Not heard anything back from you so suspect you are just asking as many questions as possible without investigating the 'Search' function too much.

May I STRONGLY recommend the posts from previous knowledgable people on the subjects you are asking for info on? That way you will get a very good cross section of responses & thoughts for you to mull over! ~ Grahame.

I used to think:

Best: Cost of living
Worst: Cost of leaving

But now it might be the other way around...

My two cents

For me the best is the value still placed nf family, especially children. People love kids here, they are still seen as special and wonderful. With that, the community still looks out for them, there is still a sense of looking out for one another. For the most part, people will go out of their way to help.

The ability to be on beautiful beaches one day, and a cool mountain range the next tubing down a river is also great!

I love the opportunity to eat fresh fruits, vegetables and meat everyday at relatively low cost. I love playing tennis or going to the pool almost everyday. I am the healthiest I have ever been mentally, physically, and emotionally. The conditions are ripe for leading a truly balanced life.

Music and dance have always been a big part of my life, so being in a culture where that is a part of the fiber is terrific.

It's the best to be able to let loose sometimes and goto a casino, drink some good rum, and smoke a wonderfully fresh cigar without having to hope on a plane to get there.

The worst is the poor public transportation options coupled with very high costs of automobiles and gas. Lack of cutural opportunities beyond the local culture. The traffic within Santo Domingo. The potholes within Santo Domingo and throughout the country.

So, the best far outwieghs the worst!!!

I know, Dominican women are some of the most beautiful women in the world. And speaking fluent Spanish is a plus in getting to know them.

We moved here from the (Y)UK because we wanted to live in a Christian country & in a free country.
Not regretted a single day & love gloating about the weather to our friends in the frozen north lol

Where do I start .....
political correctness has gone mad
you can't have a relaxing drink & a smoke
you can't say "Happy Christmas" it has to be "happy holidays" for fear of offending errrr people
the tax burden has become ridiculous
oh & some madman might just blow you up for the "love" of some deity or other
need I go on?

Your bananas have to be the same size (EU regulations) :) . EU reg. 2257/94 which states that bananas must be "free of abnormal curvature" and should be at least 5.5 inches long. EU regulation 1677/88 requires Class One cucumbers to curve less than 10mm every 10cm ( otherwise they get downgraded to second class cucumber citizens). Which is why, as a Brit. I didn't make the suggestion which one poster did on the Intimate Question thread.

But to answer you in a more profound sense, johne, what aren't free any longer are people's minds and thought processes. There is a growing tendency to accept what 'authority' decrees, to not think outside the box. The only folks really challenging mindless authority in the UK are the old age pensioners. I had a really disappointing 3 weeks in UK last June. It did produce inspiration for an article, however. If you want the reference please PM me because it really is outside the scope of this forum.

Some remedies for those you left behind

I) NYC was just about the first city in the USA that banned smoking in restaurants. Now has gone over to just about everything in sight. I am a non-smoker but hated the enforesment of the law. Slowly but surely most bars and cafes (late at night) do not enforce any longer.During a meal in a restaurant it is a pleasure to see this law enforced as who wants to eat and smoke, or suck in smoke, at the same time?
A few weeks ago I was in a great rest. in SD and in the main part of the rest. (albiet it is open to the sky) there was a guy smoking a big fat cigar. Wasn't too plesant.
2)As far as Merry Christmas--that is one of my PET PEEVES. Couldn't agree with you more but-that is not a loss of freedom. I continue to say "merry Christmas"--if a person says to me "Happy Holidays" I will answer by saying Merry Christmas"--if anything, after several years of this PC crap I noticed last year people that used to say "Happy Holidays" now say "merry Christmas" to me.
3)I can't comment on your tax situation because I have zero knowledge of your country's taxaction and what you GET FOR IT. I do know however you get what you pay for. You might not pay taxes in the D.R. BUT what do you get in social services, education, building the infrastructure, and...?
4) Getting blown up by the bad guys. Yes, your country has had a bad go of it. So, has my city to say the least. You are pretty safe from this in the DR. A very wise Dominican political figure said to me once--"We're very safe here from terrorists-Let's face it who wants a country where all they do is play bachata all day and all serious matter are left for manana"? His words not mine.

One of the main differences between living N.A. and the DR, is that there, you work all week just to live on the weekends, and here you live everyday.
