"The Outreach project to spay/ neuter the dogs and cats is being extended to Los Charimicos which is a huge task in itself and the services of the visiting veterinarian/s has to be capitalised in the time available. Anyone willing to donate time and/ or money to this very worthwhile cause of sensibly controlling the dog/ cat population on the North coast will be greatly appreciated. Anyone that can give any help please PM me for details."

Sounds like they may need some help and support at Judys' Pet Lodge/Dr. Bobs starting on Friday (?) located east of Sosua.

Can someone provide more details please?

Regards, Ringo

There are full details of the spay/ neuter clinic on the website at www.aaasosua.com along with the necessary contact details and, although lengthy, I am undernoting the recent information newsletter with details of the ongoing projects being undertaken.

"The AAAS clinic is fully functional, Mon-Fri, and performing sterilizations of homeless animals and those belonging to Dominicans of limited resources. The schedule will change according to veterinarian availability.

We performed over 500 surgeries last year and now, with the completion of our facility, nearly 100 in January alone. We need your support and donations to continue. This project, the first of its kind here, has the ability to help thousands of dogs and cats in need. It is a proven fact that when you decrease the availability of puppies, kittens, dogs and cats, people take better care of the ones they have.

Our plan is to target the tourist area of Sosua Beach and adjacent barrios.
Volunteers have been and will continue to pick up and return dogs to these areas.

Our goal is to :

Improve the health of the dog and cat population of Sosua and surrounding areas. We have found that the most effective way of doing this is by the surgical sterilization of female dogs and male puppies. Female dogs are chosen as they are directly responsible for unwanted and unhealthy puppies. They also suffer complications giving birth that can easily lead to death. The majority of these bitches would not be taken to a veterinarian in case of complications. Unneutered bitches also suffer from mammary cancer and womb infections later in life. Both male and female dogs in the Dominican Republic can contract a sexually transmitted tumor.

Sterilizing a dog before it becomes sexually active will prevent this extremely unpleasant and common condition. Anyone who has been involved with dogs in the Dominican Republic has seen male dogs with grossly enlarged and bleeding penises and female dogs with the same problems in their vagina. Including young male dogs in the sterilization project is also helpful in preventing this disease. Sterilized dogs also roam less, and hence are less prone to being hit by motor vehicles and being involved in territorial fights. Male cats are included in the program to prevent urine spraying and excessive territorial fighting.

Dogs and cats will only be collected from tourist areas and from where the families have limited income. Once sterilized, the animals will require less calories so they will become healthier on their limited food supplies. With a healthier population the human animal bond will increase with a benefit to both parties.

Both dogs and cats will be identified by ear marking.

It is anticipated that once the general population becomes aware of the benefits of sterilized animals, they will bring their animals that do not qualify for our program to established veterinary practices in the area. People who value their animals should continue to use local veterinarians for preventative healthcare such as vaccinations, antiparasite treatment and emergencies. AAAS does not provide any of these services.

AAAS promotes the neutering of all dogs and cats, male and female.
However, our program is limited only to street animals and those from homes of limited income. Visiting veterinarians donate their time and expertise often at considerable personal expense. We are extremely grateful for this and it is important that their good will is not abused.

Donations are needed and appreciated to help us in our mission.
Please see our list of (Donations Needed on Website www.aaasosua.com)

Summary
Sterilization program is limited to bitches, male puppies and cats ONLY from the targeted areas AND where the animal does not have an owner or the owner has extremely limited resources. Please do not ask us to consider animals outside this program; of course, we would like to be in a position to help all animals, but we are not.

It is important that we adhere to these guidelines. We can only continue our work with the cooperation of local veterinarians. If our services are abused and privately owned animals are presented here for surgery, we will not have the resources to continue to help the animals in need."
