I plan to be in SD during period of Sep. 09-16 and haven't arranged my hotel stay as yet. Could any of the members of this board tell me which is the best hotel for the money?

Personally, I like the Hispnolia. About 5060 USD per night, huge breakfast buffet, 2 ninutes to Malecon, beautiful pool, casino, rooms are done in 5060 style by Oscar de LArenta, excellent Staff

Hi Tom!...
Thanks for the advise and for taking the time to answer my query. I checked the archives and found that on 03-29-99 you gave high marks to the Boca Chica Resort. I guess that has to do with the usual dominican dynamics of change.
Take care.

THe Boca Chica Resort is 30-45 minutes out of Santo Domingo and is all inclusive, slightly more expensive.

If you are looking for a beach resort take BC, iy you want to be in the exciting capital take Hispanolia

in march, i stayed in the hotel napolitano or napoletano (sp..sorry)...its directly on the malecon...a short ride or walk from the colonial zone...not terribly far from boca chica...i liked the hotel..the rooms are so so, but the hotel is 7 floors and we were on the seventh floor facing the sea...great view, nice staff, nice second level restaurant-bar area... the price was much cheaper than many of the other nice hotels ...i believe seventy dollars US per night for two people...slightly less the more nights you stay...but for the money...i would stay there again

dont know if they have a web page...but if you cant find it let me know and i will find out the phone number for you

good luck

Another decent hotel in Santo Domingo is the Cervantes. About $50US/night. It's somewhat older, room decor is rather drab, but outdoor pool and restaurant are nice. Is a few blocks walking distance from the Malecon. I can come up with the phone & email address if you need them.

I think the Hispanola hotel is in the 150 USD range mark. I have stayed in the commodoro, El Napolitano, and El Naco. Of course depending on how many are in the group. There were 4 of us so we got some pretty good deals. Remember if you go too cheap some rooms may not have air conditioning if you acquire air conditioning.

The Cervantes does have A/C, ceiling fans, cable TV and refridgerators in each room.

I am sorry Sarah but the Cervantes is not a nice hotel. I have stayed in the US$25-50 rooms most of the time and the Cervantes is the worst I have stayed. It has old, thick carpet in the room, I and coworkers have had very poor service with reservations, billing and messages, the air conditioners are weak and there are only a few channels on cable. The Duque of Wellington and the Hotel Italia are both around US$40 and much nicer places. Both are on Independencia, the Duque close to Parque Independencia and the Italia is down near the Napoliano.

Remember that the Hispaniola and the Hotel Santo Domingo are sister hotels across the street from each other. They look a lot alike and you can use the facilities of both when staying at either. They are both great places to stay. The Hispaniola is $67.00US/night for one or $74.00/night for two. The Santo Domingo is $150.00US/night for one. These hotels have seasonal rates and sometimes offer deals through your travel agent. I have stayed at the Hispaniola a few times. The breakfast buffet is great. The Hotel Hispaniola has the feel of the Dominican Republic.

THat breakfast buffet can carry you through until dinner, with a light lunch thrown in.

Hispaniola has everything from fine dining room, pool, casion, discos, manually operated eleveators and close enough to Malecon to walk, but far enough away to not hear ALL th traffic

I always aks for a "Government rate" (They haven't asked again since 6 years ago, they charge me 50 for one, I think 60 for 2

If someone is so inclined, take a garden room which opens to the pool and bring a "guest" back is no problem, fact is 6 of us returned to my room one night with no questions.

It is a very respectable hotel and as long as you don't do anything out of hand to disturb other guests, no one bothers you about anything

Hey, that's OK Tom, I've stayed there a dozen times and not had any trouble. It probably has to do with my expectations vs. yours. Remember, I wear my rose colored glasses MOST of the time. Cheers, Sarah :)
