Can anyone say what the demand for insect screens is given the fact that insect season is now set to kick-off.

You will very rarely see a Dominican house with screens. Not much demand.

Most likely due to the lack of knowledge.......

Many of those that are aware of the diseases carried by insects do, in fact, have screens on their windows.

Most of these are simple wooden frams fitted into the window opening with screen tacked onto them.

Actually yes they do, just that unlike in the US and CA we use them in the window facing inside of the house and not out to street as common there...

Those who don't opt for the screens use "Mosquiteros" to cover the bed but with no protection for the other parts of the house...

The reason for the indoors use of the screens is due to the rust it would present after getting exposed to the Caribbean showers and sunny days...

It also becomes easier to remove for cleanup and don't make the windows look so tacky...

However, most of the screens that I have seen were made of plastic mesh.

Would you know where we can purchase the replacement mesh please as some of ours have been damaged now (mostly by our dogs!) - we need some in excess of 5ft wide.

Well, of course all the (aluminium) window making workshops have that screen material or can get it for you.
Here in Las Terrenas almost all ferreterias carry it, too.
More than 5 ft wide may be a problem, though.

You can buy screening in most hardware stores. Ochoa carries screen as does Hache. They have some in sosua at the hardware store by the texaco station, but it is more expensive there. I have purchased a lot of screening by the yard. It is plastic, easy to handle and lasts a long, long time.

Ahh! interesting.... so can you open and close your windows as often as you want with the type of screens generally used?

Sky,

Why do you think that there is not much demand for screens? Is it that the existing products/screens are not very attractive?

If you go around the DR and look at the Dominicans residences it is almost always open windows with no screens. The foreigners would be your major customers, along with some upscale Dominicans. Obviously this is a small market compared to the locals.

If you can sell products that the locals buy you have a much better chance at success in this country.

Sky,
You seem to have very good information. Do you think that if the government was approached along the lines of say a drive to reduce the threat of malaria and dengue by getting windows screened that would prompt the locals to demand screens?

There's no point on putting screens on a house where there are huge gaps in all the joints (doors, roof).

Much of the country has more important things to spend there $$ on than screens. Now if you're talking about foreigners and middle class Dominicans it's a different story.

One of the ICRC's biggest missions in the world is the prevention of malaria around the world. They aren't installing screens though, they are distributing nets.

We have screens in our house here in Santiago and they are common enough and readily available. Contrary to popular belief, they don't corrode or rust as the most frames are made out of aluminum.

Believe me this is such a necessary luxury to have here. sure, we get the occasional mosquito due to the kids leaving the window open, but it isn't anything like my wife's family's house - where when I'm in town the mosquitos think it is open season!
