Hello all,

I am new to the board, but it seems you are all quite knowledgeable about DR, so here is my question.

I am planning on going to the POP area for 3 days in May for my bachelor party. There will be 6 of us total, all 28 years old.

I have been to POP before and stayed at the Casa Marina Beach and had a great time. People were out partying fairly late, which is rare for an AI.

I was thinking of staying at one of the resorts in Playa Dorada since it seemed there was more going on in there when I visited.

We are not a crazy bunch and wont be doing the "wild" bachelor party thing, but we do like to drink and party and I want to make sure we stay at a place that will have like minded people.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

The resorts in Playa Dorada should suit your purposes fairly well. Drinks included, a casino and disco on premesis and decent beaches with excursions available for the daytime.

I beg to differ, The O.P. stated it is his "Bachelor Party", if one reads between the lines, one might infer part of the festivities leaving bachelorhood might include "drinking games" with members of the opposite sex!

I would recommend staying at a villa in Sosua or Cabarete instead of being stuck in an AI compound with rules.

The OP said they weren?t interested in doing the ?wild bachelor thing?is why I recommended a non-guest site, yet ecure enough for lots of drinking, and a game of quarters with some chicas is still just a taxi away.

For a more ?bacherloresque?experience, they could try Blackbeard?s, which would be my first recommendation for like minded folks and a complete bachelor experience. Everyone there is ?like minded?, the pool is nice, the bar is ample and the rooms are nice and secure. It?s a different type of all-inclusive...

Somehow I don't think so, as he writes,
We are not a crazy bunch and wont be doing the "wild" bachelor party thing
I'm guessing that means they don't want to stay in a whorehouse.

At any rate, within the POP area, there are certainly enough choices for whatever level of bachelor party one would like. It?s always good to have options!

Ok so I guess not being clear can really get you in trouble around here:surprised

So to clarify, no chicas neccessary, not for me at least.

What I meant, was that I have been to many AI's around the caribbean, and for the most part, they all have discos. However, for the most part, if you go into the discos, there is like 2 people in there.

The only place that this has not really been the case was in Puerto Plata at Casa Marina Beach.

So I guess what I am looking for is a resort that has a disco that people actually go to. When I said like-minded, I should have actually said like-aged, as we prefer a younger crowd (in their twenties like us). If there are women at the resort, then that would be great for my single friends, but we are not looking for "professionals" :squareeye

So it seems from some of the comments that Playa Dorada would work well for us. Is there one resort that is better than others for what I am looking for? I have heard that Paradise Beach has a good disco, but it seems there are no rooms throughout May and June, which makes me think they are actually closed for renovations or something.

Last question is if you are staying at one resort in PD, can you go to the discos at other resorts, and if so, do they charge a cover, and what is that typically?

Thanks again to all for your help.

In the Play Dorada complex of hotels and golf course, there is a general disco called Mangu, I believe, that fills up at night from the guests of the various hotels. That may be your answer.
Maybe some folks on the board that have vacationed here recently can give you their input.

Playa Dorada is for you

After reading your clarification I highly recommend Playa Dorada. I visit Puerto Plata very often and I was last there at the end of January and had a great time!!!

I have only been to the Grand Puerto Plata, but I would recommend it for the great food and the proximity to the discos - you can quickly walk/stumble crawl from the discos right into the hotel. I would suggest a room upgrade too, for the little extra you pay, it's worth it.

Discos:

Right now the disco Mangu is NOT the spot, it's really gone down, but Roadway and the newly opened Coco Bongo are hot. There is no cover for either place and a small presidente will cost you about 100 pesos and a vodka cran will be about 150...Have some drinks in your room at the AI resort first, to offset the costs.

Both discos are open ALL night to the guests AND the locals, who tend to come in at 2:00 AM after the discos and bars in the city are closed. They also serve hot snacks in the shopping center for those late night after party munchies.

There is a nice mix of people there and I find the clientele to be average - not scummy at all and the atmosphere is very comfortable.

We often go off the resort at around 9 to visit the rancho tipicos, if you are into Dominican music - La Canita is very popular right now, Terazza Caribe is nice too - and then we head back to Playa Dorada around midnight -1 o'clock to continue the party. I think a cab might cost anywhere between 200 and 400 pesos each way if you spanish is good. You have lots of options in Playa Dorada

Crazy Moon at Paradise is terrible.
It is dead and I don't know why they bother to open.
Crazy Moon used to be the place to go when Mangu was only for Jack Tar guests but that was a long time ago.
No cover charge. They should offer people a free drink or something to go there.

Mangu at Holiday Village is okay but much quieter since Coco Bongo opened at the plaza.
I think the cover is 200 pesos on the weekend including 1 local drink.
Might be a bit less during the week.
Mangu used to be hopping almost every night but now most places are dead during the week and many are very quiet even on weekends.

These Playa Dorada clubs are not cheap and it seems like more and more people just stay on the resorts.
It also seems like security is more selective on which locals are allowed in.

Dubi,

I juts got back from spending a week in Puerto Plata and have been to this area 4 times in the last 6 months. I'm a Blackbeard's type of guy, so I can't speak much to the accomodations at Playa Dorda. But, I do know that they allow people NOT staying in the resort to go to the discos. There was a $20 cover at Mangus (? spelling) which was one of the best places to go. They also had "professionals" working there, but I was obliviuos to it. The place is shut down for renovations and they have a smaller disco that is nice, but mostly empty. There were billboards for a new disco called the Lighhouse that just opened in Ocena World. My experiance has been that you want to pick the best accomodations for your group and then find the discos and bars through referrals, like this board. I have never been refused access to any of the bars or casinos. The reason that there was a discussion about whore houses and the sort is most AIs frown upon bringing back chicas to the hotel premises.
