Any suggestions for breakfast other than Marocha (good but too expensive on a regular basis) and Burger King (not much ambience although the kids liked the playground). Thanks

Most good bakeries - e.g. La Francesa, Panavi and La Baguette in Piantini, or the one on Isabel la Catolica in the Colonial Zone.
Adrian Tropical - 27, Malecon or Lincoln for something more substantial.

Ditto on Hermanos Villar [Pasteur & Independencia]. Also, the Mercure Hotel [El Conde & Hostos] has a breafast buffet, and Dumbo [across from Parque Independencia] is open 24 hours. Oh, and Paco, on El Conde across from Parque Independencia.

Ive had them, and they are good - I heard they were flown in from NY...which would make more sense than Cali..then again, this *is* the DR!

The owner said he flew them in from California. He is the guy from Puerto Rico with the bad hair, or wig, whatever.

Ferreteria Americana

Try the restaurant cafe Americana at the Ferreteria Americana on Av Kennedy westbound, not far from Av Lincoln. The site offers good food and service for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at reasonable prices. It is very clean. It is on the second level up using the escalator opposite the main entrance. At the top of the escalator you are there.

Other advantages, plenty of parking and you can go shopping for home goods and hardware at one stop.

Regards,
PJT

Ditto on Hermanos Villar. Breakfast by the pound. You choose, they weigh, you pay. Easy walk to hotels, Malicon and Conde.

La Francesca

We love La Francesca on Lincoln just north of 27th de Feb. Not a great yuppie, fresh - healthy OR an all-american, get your french toast breakfast, but better than most variety, table service, well priced and tasty!

Can any one tell me how much I can expect to spend at one of these places for an average (inexpensive) meal?

You could eat at Hermanos Villar for 4$ or so. Or an empanada for 1.50$
It is also possible to eat a 75$ dinner.......

If you are on a tight budget and need to eat out you could assume you will need to spend:

Breakfast: 3$ (empanada and fresh juice)
Lunch: 4$ (for something on the daily menu in a comedor)
Dinner: 4$ (at a cafeteria like villar hermanos)

Don't expect lobster at these prices though ;)

A nice place for breakfast or a snack in the Colonial Zone is La Cafetera del Conde - they do excellent coffee, natural juices, empanadas, cake and toasted sandwiches.

At Villar Hermanos, if you come just before they close, (11pm) you can get anything (reasonable) for a flat RD$100

www.
American-style breakfasts at Marocha, on Gustavo Mejia Ricart. In the same area, Cuchara de Madera, Pasteleria del Jardin and La Baguette are also very popular.

Maybe it's late to be adding on, but Colatte Cafe is AWESOME! We found it by accident while looking for Le Petit Bistro. It is located in Plaza Laura in Piantini, at the corner of Federico Geraldino and Hector Inschaustegui. Delicious italian style cappuccinos, great fresh OJ and the pancake balls and dominican breakfast are to die for.
