I'm an American; I've been in the DR [POP] for 12 years; I have a cedula & residencia.
* I seem to have heard from several then recent foreign immigrants that a new resident may import:
* A. 1 container load of furniture, presumably for domestic use; &
* B. 1 automobile for personal use; both duty free.
* Is anyone aware of the actual law? Citations? Copy of the law. Has anyone had practical experience in either area? I'm most interested in the car.
* Suggestions? Recomendations? Resources? Experienced, reasonably honest, lawyers? [Tongue in cheek! I'm a former lawyer! "Reasonably honest", too!] Thank you.

12 years in POP and you have to ask? Sorry. You are going to need an import expert.

As last I knew to new res. import law.
1. Have to have your temp. res. papers.
2. Move/import has to be within 6 months.
3. Can not have been in the D.R. for over 120 days in the last year from date of import.
4. It is NOT free. Depending on what is in the container and age of the item and no more then ONE of each item. Second TV, stove, refer... etc. can be taxed at 80% of the value AS DETERMINED BY THE IMPORT PEOPLE.

Now lets' wait for legal/current info.

Regards, Ringo

BTW: lawyers and former lawyers are taxed at 200%. lol
