I've always found the most interesting variety on the small reef in front of the Bahia Principe (Portillo) hotel. You can walk along the shore either side and swim out.
we always go out in front of the colibri, just a little further down towards the river, there's a 'pathway of coral on either side that leads out to some nice sights
gilroy - we were at the Bahia Principe (Portillo) hotel last week. My son said the snorkeling was GREAT. AND it is just off the beach. Be careful of renting snorkeling equipment in that area. I read on this forum that a vendor in that same area charges you extra money when you return the equipment claiming you broke it when if fact you didn't. The person did not pay them and the hotel refused to let them leave the resort until they paid the vendor. My son had his own equipment. Good luck and enjoy.
