Could someone recommend an electrician who knows what he is doing and can program a Xantrex Inverter and voltage regulator?

I did a search and read through as many of the numerous threads on inverters, but could not find answers to my questions.

I was having a problem with my inverter. It was using battery power, even though the street power was functioning. An ex-pat friend recommended an electrician. He came, adjusted my inverter, saying that in Perla Marina, the power (voltage) is often low. (Please know that I am no electrician and am explaining this to the best of my ability.) The electrician said that my system would function better with four more batteries, making 12 on my stack, and a voltage regulator.

I responded that I understood that if I put in new batteries, I must replace my older ones. He said that is not true when adding batteries.

So, now I have 12 batteries, a voltage regulator and an inverter that don't work right. When the power goes off, the breaker for my house trips. When the power goes back on, the inverter continues using battery power, not street power.

I think my electrician is in over his head. He only speak Spanish. I speak household Spanish, but since I know nothing of electricity and inverters and do not know the terminology he is using, Spanish-wise, I am truly at a loss.

Perhaps I have been taken to the cleaners. Or perhaps this is tricky for even the best electricians. Don't know.

I am a woman living here alone 90% of the time. I need someone I can trust who has the expertise to get the inverter correctly programmed and coordinated with the voltage regulator.

Know anyone???

Maybe the voltage regulator isn't working properly? You have the right invertor and if its not switching properly, the street electricity probably isn't quite right. I am sure someone here can recommend a good electrician in your area. We have a few in Santiago.

Lindsey,

What model is your inverter? How to set/change settings will be different on some models. If you have senors on your incoming street power that are not set properly will also mess up the inverter.

On-line manuals can be found at Xantrex Technology Inc.. You can find the recommended settings for your inverter.

Good luck, Ringo

Ringo, I have the manual for my inverter. One must be an electrical engineer to undertand it. (Or am I reading Chinese???)

What are the senors you are referring to? How do I learn if they are NOT set properly? And if the senors are not set properly, who adjusts that? EdeNorte? an electrician?

Don't mess with it yourself. Get a good electrician. How to know if they are good? Find out if they went to college, preferably PUCMM, although UTESA will probably do. They will be more expensive but will get your problem sorted out.

Ive used freddies multiserv but im not sure i would recommend them....they took the inverter away to santiago and it took about three weeks for them to fix it......perhaps yours canbe fixed in situ....mine exploded so needed more maintenance

Freddy may be able to help you. He has a store across from the small supermarket in Sosua, formerly Producto Sosua.

A couple more questions?

Was the inverter working correctly in the past?
OR, new installation?
Again, what model?
Have you have any other electrical work done, not related to the inverter?
Do you have a generator with an automatic transfer switch?

I'm not an electrician but found that I know more (had the learn) then most Dominican experts. I have to re-wire and adjust just about everything.

Trying to help, Ringo

Thanks for trying to help, the advice, questions, etc....

I received a pm from a friend and respected dr1 member. He understands these systems and is willing to stop by, take a look, and either resolve the problem or make recommendations.

I will hold off for now, until our friend takes a look. Should further needs and questions arise, I will post again.

Many thanks-

Lindsey

Specialist Needed

... It was using battery power, even though the street power was functioning.
Have the "AC Transfer Voltage" settings and the AC relays checked.

...I understood that if I put in new batteries, I must replace my older ones. He said that is not true when adding batteries.
You're right; he is wrong.

There are quite good people with inverter knowledge.
Again, the problem is to find them.

I remember when I always drove all the way to SD to get a faulty inverter repaired in a "TRACE" workshop. At one time they mixed up two transformer cables and I had to go back (2x 220 km) to have their mistake corrected .

In the meanwhile I have found a very good specialist (in Nagua), he works without schematics but has always found the problem within minutes.

Chris- It was Rocky who pm'ed me. He came, tested some things, explained some things, and disconnected the new batteries so I am only functioning off the older ones which are working well.

Our plan is to do hourly voltage checks to determine if the power in Perla Marina really does fluctuate, as the electrician claimed, and whether the voltage regulator is necessary.

The street power has been off and on all day here, so maybe it is a good test of the system.

And, thanks, gmiller261, for the name and numbers of Freddy Multiservice. If I continue to have inverter issues which Rocky can't resolve, I will call him.

And Lindsey the 'senors' someone referred to & you picked up on were 'sensors' so I'm not surprised you had difficulty following. It wasn't you being dumb! ;)

Glad Rocky came to your rescue.

I bought at OchoA a Camsco Digital meter for about $50 U.S.

It works great and is a great comfort, as I leave it plugged in 24/7.

The voltage at my place varies between 88 and 115, mostly staying at 97 volts. The meter really helps to understand the problems, house lights stay on, but UPS?s etc really have a hard time, but at least I know why by looking at the meter. The meter was a GREAT investment.

This has only been since TS Olga, EdeNorte supplies us 24/7, but the voltage level really sucks. We have only 4 people on the transformer, so that is not the problem.
