Surgeon specialist and a pediatrician

1) You need to speak Spanish very well
2) You need to register at a Dominican University
3) You need to take a few courses
4) You need to submit your medical degree, coursework, syllabus, and Medical License to the Dominican Medical College, plus you need to have everything translated into Spanish and certified and stamped by a Dominican Consulate.
5) All of this take three or four years, according to reports.
And this is just the beginning.

Are you starting from a base knowledge of no Spanish? If so, you may WANT more time in the university. Hillbilly's info is excellent. One thing you might want to consider is that doctors in the DR do not make a lot of money even with two specialties--compared to many other countries.

Have you been to the DR? Please consider visiting and spending time before making a longterm commitment. Not all exotic--or even Caribbean islands--are even remotely similar. A person who has visited one area of the DR might not have a true impression of what living here would take. I'm not trying to discourage you but rather assist you in making an educated decisions.

There certainly should be ample opportunities for you to work once you are fully fluent in Spanish and licensed here as long as you are not seeking to become rich but are rather content to be living in a warm island climate. I say this knowing that some areas of the country do not have training opportunities available while others are screaming to ge their hands on a well-trained doctor.

One questions I have is what you mean by your "pharmacology and nursing doctrine"? What exactly did your training consist of? Were these areas of study prior to your MD or some sub-sub specialties in addition to your pediatrics and trauma? If so (for either case), at what stage in your training and for how long was the program. TIA. I'm interested only to learn more about the education process of health care professionals in other places and to assist you.

As for translating, you will be able to pay someone here to translate IF you bring OFFICIAL university seal-embossed copies of all of your documents. May I also suggest that you bring a full CV, photos, and letters of recommendations from professionals in your field, as well as professors.

Okay...you've satisfied my questions. The pay here for public docs is not at all great but as a specialist here privately you would do better than what you've listed. I notice that you say "net" payments (is that after practice costs?)

I'm still not clear on the nursing and pharmacy part but it isn't central to your question.

One further question though...on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being perfect fluency of a native English speaker) how fluent would you say you are in ENGLISH? TIA!

Thanks for the reply. I work in an orphanage clinic (as the pubic health officer and primary care coordinator/provider--when our pediatrician is no. The NPH orphanage is on the South side of the island (opposite of Sosua and Caberete) in a batey of Romon Santana.

You should be able to get a supervisoral traineeship in one of the tourist clinics. I'm not but I believe you can work under a licesed MD from day one here. That is what I do in the NPH clinic. While the Pediatrician admits that my knowlege base is much braoder and I have more clinical experience, she has the DR license so ultimately she is responsible. If you find someone like that to work with, you'll be hands-on much faster. I find it also easier to speak Spanish when I'm dealing with medical words. I know the material inside and out and don't have to work around those issues. I get to focus more on the nuances of subjective speach (the I 'would have done this if I could have' or 'she ought have had that helmet on prior to the accident.' Would have, could have and should have drive me nuts!

Technically this is not the appropriate arena to discuss this but it is your thread. You--as an MD-- should be able to buy these here. As to whether YOU can send them to someone outside, I really can't advise you on that.

I will give you some advice on the pharmaceuticals here though. My experience as well as discussions with many other professionals tells me that the phamaceuticals are not as reliable here as in other places. I'm not sure you would be doing your friend any favors by supplying them to him.
