My 8 year old stepson suffers from asthma and/or other resperatory and allergic problems. His problem is quite severe and does not seem to be improving. His mother has been taking him to a specialist at Clinica Bournigal, and is looking for a pediatric specialist in Santiago (they live in Sosua).

We are also very interested in trying natural (herbal?) treatment as well. Does anyone have knowledge in this area to share with us?

I seem to remember seeing an Holistic center somewhere on the road between Monte LLano and Santiago, but I'm not sure.

A reference to a conventional pediatric specialist would be very much appreciated as well.

thanks -D

i have heard that eating locally produced honey, from free range bees, as opposed to honey that is strictly from orange blossoms or clover for example, trains the body to adopt to the pollens that trigger the asthma since it is ingested. there could be some truth to this, it kinda makes sense, i have no first hand knowledge though. i do not know the amount to eat either, it is just something i heard or read somewhere. if it is any comfort i was asthmatic as a kid and outgrew it, but not 100% cured. the air pollution in SD can set it off once in a while. when i was younger, in my twenties, i moved from upstate NY to key west Fl. and the asthma stopped almost completely. i believe from the clean sea air, most pollen gets blown out to sea there and the incoming air has been over the ocean for thousands of miles as it mostly comes out of the east. i would think that being in sosua is a point in your favor, if you are not on a dusty road. road dust is a trigger for an attack. i have also heard that coffee, caffiene acting as a stimulant, is good to treat an asthma attack but i have not tried it. tell that boy only _________ (fill in blank, smart, good looking, fast runners) get asthma..........

I can recommend two clinicians: Dr. Fernando Hernando and Benjamin Hernandez, both at Clinica Corominas in Santiago... Stop playing around with second and third tier doctors...come to Santiago...and see the best in the area...
Why? My son had asthma...I have carried him up stairs to see his doctors...

sounds like you need to get some alergy or intolerance testing done- it is usually something that you eat or drink everyday that eventually you become intollerant to (milk and wheat flour are the most common)

HATHA YOGA
Having been an Asthma sufferer for over 30 years I would not recommend coffee. I started pranayama 10 years ago and it has made a tremendous difference to me. If I had practiced yoga breathing earlier on, I am sure that I would not have suffered as much as I have done - please give it a try.
